Western Saddle  | | | |  As you can perhaps imagine this is a bit of a mystery to me having only ridden English style, though I'd love to try Western sometime. So I am wondering if someone can answer a question about if for me. In English Saddle you can alter the line of the horse, make it tighten or expand its circle, etc by a gentle pressure exerted with your foot. But in Western saddle with your legs lying much straighter and on what appear to be quite small horses surely your foot, if you are a tall chap, lies below the belly of the horse, at least it sometimes looks that way on cowboy films. So the question is this leg yielding possible in Western Saddle or is there a different technique?

| |  Its all in the training of the horse. The leg can still touch the belly of the horse so you can still control them this way. I've ridden several trained as such.
Oh BTW in those old cowboy movies the rider was more or less standing in the saddle with their sturrups set low in order to look taller. Thats not how you really ride in those saddles.

| | Thanks Raydene, your pics where most informative and interestingly I see your daughter still has a bent leg in Western, maybe then cowboy films are rather misleading. I'm 5'10 but my horse is nearly that high at the withers so my foot sits a little higher up. I think possibly, we ride with shorter stirrups in English than you but I can't be sure, will have to take some photos to compare.

| |  i have ridden both ways,for show and for plaeasure. as well as years of bareback. i always used my legg.my quarter horse was so intune with me he responed to the slightest shift in weight.i used the same legg cues for all types of riding, only my hands and tack changed. two hands or one hand,leggs the same.
