I will give you a few tips for a hotel and hope others will give their tips too. First if you are going to travel if you go past a rest area stop there are lots of coupon books there that hotels use to compete for leisure business. The coupons are a great way to save money. Places on line can sometimes actually be great in prices then what you might get if you just get a rest area coupon because the hotel has to pay the online service a commission. Also when getting a motel with a pool double check a day or two before arriving that the pool is working. Due to fuel costs many hotels will have their pools closed to maintenance always check ahead of time. Also ask desk clerks what is the best tasting and cheapest place to eat they always know. So do you have any tips?

Those are great tips. We always use the coupon books or the internet. Another thing is don't get another room when you can just get the extra matress. That will save you more money. Always go to the cheaper places to eat. Yes you may want something really nice or good or different from what you normally have but allow yourself 1 meal of eating something nice or different. That's all I can think of for now.

You reminded me of another one. Take snacks with you. The snack machines are always higher priced because people tend to munch at motels.

Book the motel or hotel as much in advance as you can with a rate that allows cancellation at zero cost or minor cost. After booking keep checking the motel or hotel rates to see if the rates for the same hotel and dates are going down or up. To find and compare rates I usually use at least http://www.expedia.com http://www.booking.com http://www.deskbell.com http://www.orbitz.com If you find out that the rates are going down to a level that justify a re-booking, cancel the previous booking and re-book, in this way I have saved in excess of one hundred $$$ but if your stay is an expensive hotel or long stay saving can be even bigger. Sometimes the rates do not go down but they go up! Well, be happy because it means you saved on your motel or hotel by making the reservation well in advance.

I have always been told to make sure that you ask if there are any specials running especially if you are staying more than one night. Alot of times they won't just tell you that there are specials for more than one night. Thanks for the tips by the way.

You could opt for the extra mattress rather than booking another room. Go out if you need to eat. Look for nearby restaurants and eateries. Reserve rooms in advance.

Hi Tricia, Always ask if they have any discounts running at that time (they do not volunteer this information if you do not ask) Then ask if they give any discounts for special groups such as Military, certain driver clubs such as AAA, senior citizen if it applies to your situation. When you check in to your room, take a moment to look at the coupons in the back of the phone book. There are restaurant coupons in there often times. Another idea is to get a coupon from www.Restaurant.com if you know what area your are going to be in when you settle for the night. If you are a military member (active duty or retired) a senior citizen, or a AAA member - always ask the restaurant if they give discounts as well. I have gone to burger king and received 50% off (manager's discount) by asking about the military. Usually it is only a 10% discount and each store applies such things as they see fit. so while one burger king will say no, another may give you 30% and yet another 50%. It does not hurt to ask and if nothing else it gives the store a moment to consider the military member and their sacrifices.

Those are great tips. We have used tose coupons from rest areas before. We always join the free rewards programs at hotels. THey sometimes give you discounted rooms or you earn free nights. When my husband was on the every week with his job he always tried to stay at the red roof inns. The company paid for the room but he earned free nights that we were able to use when visiting our kids in Michigan. Made our trips home more affordable.
