Have you ever seen a drunk duck?

baby ducks that were rescued - These are the actual baby ducks that my husband, landlord, and their son rescued after the momma and papa ducks got 'drunk' from fermented berries in our driveway.

I personally never did, but my husband, landlord, and one of the landlord's adult sons did back in 2004. There happened to be a family of wild ducks (male, female, and five ducklings) in between our front yards, though more on the land lord's side, due to the fact that she has a huge mulberry tree in her yard. The momma and papa ducks happened to be eating the old berries that had fallen to the ground. Apparently they got drunk from these fermented berries, flew away in a rather strange like manner almost getting hit by cars driving on the roadway, leaving their babies behind. My husband, the landlord, and the son tried to gather up all the ducklings, but unfortunately my dogs had gotten a hold of a couple that slipped through our fence, but they were able to rescue the other 3. My landlord asked if my husband could take the ducklings in as there was no sign of their parents coming back. He had to say no as our dogs would have killed those for sure. The landlord understood and took them in to raise until they got big enough to be on their own. Several months later my female dog got loose on two separate occasions and ended up getting the ducklings that had survived. Darn dog!:(

I thought the ducks getting drunk was funny. But the rest of the story was quite sad. My dogs are constantly chasing after birds but luckily the birds are faster then the dogs.

My dogs also chase after birds, or any small animal for that matter. It's too bad the ducklings were so young and couldn't fly to get away. I'm sure it would have made a big difference.

The drunk duck part is funny. It's sad though that they abandonded their babies. Are your dogs bird dogs by any chance. Our dog got loose once and ate the neighbor boys pet chicken.

My dogs are Akitas and have are very high prey. They are very cat-like, just like when it comes to a cat chasing a mouse. My dogs killed the last few chickens that we had as well as rats, our cats, mice, possums, and other small creatures that come through our yard. I guess that's why they aren't a popular breed.
