How do you avoid pop-ups?

One of our three computers seems to always have extra windows popping up every time we open Internet Explorer. We have anti-pop-up software installed, as well as Norton Antivirus. I've had people suggest clearing my cookies and getting more anti-pop-up software, but I don't trust a lot of the anti-pop-up software available on the internet. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of these pop-ups, or reliable free software that will stop this outbreak?

I had this problem and took my computer into the shop. They cleared everything for me and I ended up having some viruses. The added spybot and adaware to keep the popups off.

You can use Mozila Firefox, there is automatic protection anti pop-up if you set it at the preferences.

i am using a mac and i don't have a problem with popups because the Safari browser handles popups very well. well it all comes down to this if you want to have a popup free life go and change your browser to mozilla firefox its great and especially it's free.
