I would like to download a fungame for my kids that will offer them fun while using the computer and at the same time acts as a development/educational tool for them

I've found 'walking with dinosaurs' an educational investigation sort of game that if the childs interest in that area can be fantastic.

Have you looked into the Reader Rabbit and JUmp Start Programs. You can buy them new for $20, but can get them on half.com and ebay for as low as $2.
