Just curious, what does the dot between the eyes mean?

I have seen many Indian women with a red or black spot on their forehead, between the eyes. What does it symbolize?

I think the red dot symbolizes a married woman and the black dot symbolizes an unmarried woman. I'm not sure exactly, and I know there will be others who can confirm the right answer to this question.

My Indian neighbor told me it means the woman is not married.
