Will you accept a straw from strangers? |
|
The day was hot, but that was not what bothered me. I was walking from the train station to a shopping mall, and I was bombarded by noises from both the traffic and construction sites along the way. The noise volume was so high that I could not even hear the music from my earphones.
10 more metres. 5 more. There. I stepped into the cool comfort of the mall. Feels very good. I took a few steps forward and suddenly, a girl dashed out from behind me, from my left side, to block my path. She wasn't exactly fast, but she covered the distance in many hurried steps. It conveyed a definite sense of urgency.
I stopped. I had to stop, or I would have knocked onto her. I looked at her and saw that she was middle-aged, wearing office attire and donning a smile. So I asked her, "Do I know you?" She stuck out both hands and tried to shove something at me. What a "surprise". It turned out to be a handful of drinking straws. She said, "For shoppers". Despite her smile, I responded too quickly and too automatically. "Not interested, thanks". And I continued my walk.
With hindsight, why would I want those straws anyway? They were not sealed in packets so who knows how dirty they might have got despite the clean look. And it just strikes me as weird. Why on earth is this shopping mall giving out straws to shoppers? Surely they can afford something more expensive and practical?:P
So if you were me, what would you do if you were "confronted" by this lady under such strange circumstance? FYI, on my way out, I was met by another of her colleagues who tried to shove me some straws too. Do you accept strange things from strangers in public? Or will you actively approach them if you see them giving out things? Do share your thoughts.;-)

72. racheldarcy (2399) | 3 years ago | This osunds very strange to me - I have no idea why someone would want to give out free straws. I do not accept many things from strangers not even leaflets. i was stopped today by someone trying to get me to donate money to charity each month. What people who sign up to this do not realise is that in the UK people 'selling' these charity subscriptions get paid £100 per sale.

lordwarwizard (10401) | 3 years ago | This was something that came up in the news in Singapore too. These people asking for donations get a commission. It seems that we are donating significantly to these sellers than the true charities themselves.

73. crazynurse (5708) | 3 years ago | Well that is a very strange happening indeed! Of all the odd things to give away at a mall...straws?! I'm afraid I would have done just as you did. However, my classic line is, "No thanks, I'm trying to quit." hehe.

74. pyewacket (11590) | 3 years ago | Nope I don't think you were wrong in declining the straw offer...There have been times you walk into a store and maybe they're doing some promotional thing and have trays of food to sample...or drinks...or a different flavored coffee..etc, etc...but unless the item was sealed and wrapped up, uh, no I wouln't take it...

75. jennybianca (6163) | 3 years ago | This is weird. Why were they given out straws? It is must have been some sort of promotion, but I can't think what they were promoting... except straws. No, I woudn't accept one. Who knows where they had been, if they were not packaged! In fact, there are so many promoters in the shoppiung malls nowadays, that I have to walk around them, & if I can't avoid them, I need to very firmly say no thank you.
I refused a ballon this morning when shopping. They are just a nuisance. Why would I want a ballon when I am oushing a heavy, loaded trolley?
| |
| |
|
|
lordwarwizard (10401) | 3 years ago | How much would you earn from selling straws anyway? I don't see the difference between 1 straw and the other lol.:P
You are lucky to be offered a balloon. Balloons have become increasingly rare in Singapore. And when they appear, they normally give it to you only if you are a kid. No balloons for adults!

77. bindishah (1694) | 3 years ago | It could probably be some kind of a marketing gimmick. maybe it was a kind of advertoisement for a straw company. Or could also be a social study to see how people react to strange situations. You never know nowadays - peope study funny things. But yeah i dont think I would accept a bunch of straws from some stranger. First of all, i probably wouldnt have need for them while shopping ands its just straws..if I needed them id buy them.

78. crickethear (1144) | 3 years ago | I personally don't get near them. I have a funny story about something similar. My family and I were on vacation. This lady came up to us, and she handed me and my mom this flower she had made out of some kind of paper. We both said thank you, and then she asked for money. We didn't have any on us, as we were just on a walk. Well, we told her no, we didn't have any, and she ripped the flowers out of our hands and walked off. We were floored. We didn't approach her, she approached us, and just handed them. Now because of that, whenever, I see someone selling something, or coming at me with something, I run the other way.
| |
| |
|
|
lordwarwizard (10401) | 3 years ago | That was one experience! Very presumptuous of her to assume that you wanted to buy the thing. Ripping it from your hands instead of asking it back nicely is just so rude too.

79. mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | I wonder if they had a drinks shop and were hoping people would immediately want to buy some orange juice. I wouldn't accept them either. We sometimes have gypsies in town who try to sell 'lucky white heather' which of course is ordinary heather that they have bleached. They try to put a little tiny bit with its stem wrapped in foil, into your hand and then say cross my palm with silver. They are not so friendly if you hand them a 5 penny piece. The largest silver coin is 50pence which is about $1 . I always say no thankyou. Not because I despise gypsies,(my mum had some family that were gypsy so it would be silly to despise them) but because they are selling a little piece of plant that they picked from the roadside and are pretending it is lucky.

|
lordwarwizard (10401) | 3 years ago | It is a big mall and the nearest drink shop is far, far away.
Gypsies are cool. I would love to meet one with real magic.
