I just got home from Lowe's. I'm getting ready for spring so I bought soil mix, Thompson's, sand paper, paint brushes and a face mask (to prevent breathing in sanding). While passing the bin where they put their boxes for trashing I saw a large, think plastic banner complete with grommet holes. I didn't unfold it but it looked like it was for an advertisement that was over and ready for discard. Just so the cleak didn't think I was stealing it, I told her where I had gotten it. She said she needed to check with the manager.

Well, the manager said I couldn't have it. I was going to use it as a drop cloth when I get around to staining. I pointed out the it was in the bin to be trashed, but the answer was still no. The lady behind me said it's probably because it has some manufacturer's name on it. (The manager didn't give me an excuse.) But driving home, I realized how many times I'd gotten empty boxes from there to ship stuff in and it's never been a problem, regardless of what companies name was on the box. I feel like giving my business to Home Depot from now on, even though it means driving about 5 extra miles. In the day where recycling is so stressed, I can't understand what the problem was. Does this make sense to you?

No it doesn't make sense, and you might also tell the owner what you think about this and make your feelings known about recycling. I would also say that you feel you should take your business elsewhere because you were refused something they were throwing out anyway. I think I would have asked them why I couldn't have it.

I would have asked the exact reason why. Chances are the manager doesn't really have a good answer, but maybe was afraid that his supervisor might be mad if he gave it away, so he decided to hold on to it. Frankly, I can't understand why a manufacturer's name would have anything to do with it if it was for something that had already passed. Frankly, I've had problems with Home Depot in the past two. No two people in that store will give you the same answer when asked the same question which leads me to believe that a lot of these people have no clue what they're doing.
