Flying Deep Fat Fryer Lid - I do NOT believe it!

Following on from the famous flying cake, gabs was on the telephone line talking to me tonight when another flying phenomena, this time of the scary kind, occurred.
I was cooking myself some chips, as I was bored, and I lifted the lid, chips cooking nicely, closed the lid and whooooooooooooooosh the lid came flying past my face! No, no, no worry about fat, that is in the fryer and behaving perfectly normally, was the lid. If I hadn't moved back it would have knocked me out.
Now, this fryer is only about 3 months old, I have used it a couple of times, I have read the book and I know I use it correctly because Other Half has also read the book and supervised me.
I am totally unhurt but it did shake me up, so anyone out there know why this happened, as I sure do not want it to happen again!

Thank you Sassy, and welcome back:-)
No, I was on my own, but I was on the phone chatting to gabs who heard the whole thing and once she found out I was not hurt, that was the call gone. All she could do was laugh.

You are right that he likes to be in control, but he wouldn't do anything dangerous like that. There is another post where I put about him turning the drawer unit round and watching me try to put things into the drawers but no he wouldn't do anything dangerous.
So you would be just as supportive as gabs was, no surprises there lol. However, I do pick my friends for their sense of humour and since I was not hurt I can hardly complain about you laughing, can I?

Oh yes it WAS you! Subconscious telekinesis via the phone! I am very pleased you and Gissi were not there as had I not been alone chances are the thing would have hit someone.
Other Half can not work out how it happened, unless it somehow half unclipped whilst being moved.
Anyways, please, please do not say it is not your fault every time I post, people will think you are terrified of me!

Not half as glad as I am. It wouldn't have killed me but I think it would have broken something. I am working out a letter to the supplier, as I think it could have been quite nasty.
Yes, my Dear, I would not hurt you at all, but I do think about it sometimes . . .

Welcome to my world, Lakota, it happens all the time. We went shopping today and a till spontaneously went beserk and then stopped working. We didn't even touch the thing!

I would imagine a spring got caught somewhere and projected the lid of the deep fat fryer into the air. Just the same, you're lucky you weren't hurt and if it's under guarantee, I would definitely take it back, ask questions and complain. That's not a good thing to happen, especially after only three months.
I'm glad you were quick thinking enough to avoid injury but please take care with things like this Shelagh. The lid was probably quite hot on the inside as well.
Brightest Blessings.

Quick thinking doesn't come into it, I have always had an excellent survival dodge lol. It was only the lid.
Other Half is checking it all over to see if there is any defect and if so I shall take it back, but otherwise it was probably just one of those things.
Thank you for your nice words.
hugs

Hi Shelagh, No I do not understand why the lid would of done that oh boy what a shock you would of had and you are very lucky that you were not hurt as this could of really done some damage to you, maybe it happened due to the lid not being on correctly and due to the pressure this is the only thing I can think of why it would fly off.

Well, yes, I was shocked and it is lucky I was not hurt. It was only the lid, no hot fat or anything, but it came at such a speed.
I am going back to shallow frying, the only reason we got the deep fat fryer was because Other Half thought THAT was dangerous lolololol.

I have no idea what happened to make it do this, but maybe you should consider getting a refund and buying a different fryer if it's not that old, since it sounds dangerous and could happen again!?! I know the liuds are completely detatchable usually so that they can be cleaned, but they should be securely on whilst cooking. I'm glad you escaped unscathed!

Well, Other Half can not see how it happened either. all he can think is that it somehow loosened as it was carried from the surface where it is stored to the surface where it is used.
It certainly shook me and I shall not be using the thing again for a while!

That's really scary! Was it steam from the wet potatoes perhaps? I don't have a deep fat frier so I can't really say but did you rinse the chips under the tap before popping them into the frier? Mum used to say to keep them as dry as possible, maybe if you rinse them you should dry them a bit on some kitchen paper in shake them in a tea-towel before putting them in the hot fat.
When I worked as frier in a chip shop we used to let them drain really well before popping them in the fat.

oh wow! You are on good form today, and that is nice to see!
Maybe I have quaked up lol. Yes, I am writing to the manufacturer and tonight we are having jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings, I think the boys are now trying to work out which ones make the most mess and take the most time, and of course, leave the stickiest plates to wash up!

Yup, I always make sure the potatoes are dry, as I have seen what happens when you drop something wet into hot fat and it is rather alarming. There is no reason why it happened and I am writing to the manufacturer. I was lucky I was not injured, but then that's me, when you are as clumsy as me you learn how to duck!
