Refinishing a Bathtub - DIY

The bathtub in my house is in horrible shape. First, it's pink, which I find gross in a bathroom that is green, gray and blue accents, but I can't afford to pull it out and replace it nor can I afford to have it refinished professionally. I'd like to redo it white, but failing that, even just redoing the pink enamel is better than the stains and scratchy surface it currently has. Anyone have any experience with refinishing a bathtub yourself? Any product suggestions? And dos or don'ts that you could think of?

My parents bought this house back in 1974, and I know the bathtub hasn't been replaced since then. It was in awful shape when I was a kid, so my mom had it professional resurfaced. That was over 15 years ago, and the bathtub still looks brand new. I would suggest saving up to get it done by a professional-it's better than risking goofing it up or having it not last, in my opinion.

Thanks, but that's not really an option.

There is a product that you should be able to get in any home improvement store. Here in the US it cost around $30.00. The product is called Tough as Tile Tub&Tile BathTub Refinisher. It comes in a spray can, or in a brush form. (I suggest the spray kind for a more professional look.) and is easy to apply.

Follow the directions and you can't go wrong, but seriously, get the spray or you will have brush strokes in your tub and it will look funny. I used the spray to refinish my tub and it looks 100% brand new and professional, using this product and following the directions.

I haven't had any problems with it so far. I did it over 3 years ago and it still looks and feels great.
