Preconceived ideas are funny! |
|
I was talking to my truck-driving son today. His route was taking him up into New York State. He was driving in the west part of the state and was in lovely green rolling hills, picturesque farms and lots of little towns. I realized I had always lumped "New York City" with "New York" and thought of large, cosmopolitan cultural centers with lots of people, tall buildings and subways. How funny and how silly of me! But, I've heard that people think I should own cattle and have an oil pump in my back yard since I live in Texas! I wish!

1. danvino (875) | 3 years ago | Yes, and I was one of those people who had a conceived idea that New York state consisted of mainly Manhattan LOL!! I was stationed in the Air Force at Rome, New York and also had a chance to see some of the scenic views in, as they call it, upstate New York.

danvino (875) | 3 years ago | Now I'm going back quite a few years; I would say the middle 60s. I remember that it was the only time in my Air Force career that I had a woman supervisor and all I can remember was her first name, Evelyn. She was great to work with. In fact, I received the Accomodation Medal and great Efficiency Reports from her.

2. hachimitsu (860) | 3 years ago | Stereotypes are signs of ignorance, but we probably all unintentionally have them stored somewhere in our mindsets.
Although I admit, I live in New York City myself, and I have long had the preconceived notion that all Texans are Southern-accented cowboys living amongst Tornadoes and going to the rodeo every week. Part of the blame goes to my sister; when she went to business meetings in Texas, she told me stories about how the businessmen there wore cowboy boots and cowboy hats with their suits -__-;

3. nerdytina (2037) | 3 years ago | Yes, it's very funny how we often tend to think in terms like that--in regards to locations, as well as people who live in certain locations or who work in certain professions. We do it without even realizing it and it can be funny, but it can also be a really big eye opener when we realize our preconceived notions are not reality!

4. razcal2267 (9491) | 3 years ago | Growing up right outside New York city and having family in Syracuse New York I know all too well that there are different "types" of New York but yet every time I hear someone say that they grew up in New York I get the same picture that you do about the tall buildings and subways. Funny that even a New Yorker can see things so cloudedly about the state they live in huh? I did have a few other preconceived ideas about different states but most of those have been cleared up since visiting.

7. lloydanthony111 (1178) | 3 years ago | We have the same problem here in New Jersey. People associate us with the Mafia because of the Sopranos.
Sometimes we are look at as the dirty little state next to New York.
Here are some facts about New Jersey that many people aren't aware of.
New Jersey has a diverse landscape that offers an ecosystem of breathtaking beauty.
The spectacular 70,000-acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area beckons you to enjoy the 40 miles of Delaware River landscape, waterfalls, rugged mountain scenery and unlimited outdoor activities.
You can explore over one million acres of farms, forests and wetlands as you canoe, kayak and swim in New Jersey’s Pinelands, the country’s first National Reserve.
I wonder how many people in New Jersey even know about these facts.

lloydanthony111 (1178) | 3 years ago | There are more cases of Lymes desease in our western states than in New Jersey. If that's the only fault you can find with our great state, then we aren't doing too bad.
What perfect state are you from?

8. sigma77 (4282) | 3 years ago | Excellent subject. I was amazed when I first went to NY state. Sure, the was NYC and all the concrete and steel, but upstate NY was heavenly. I have found this to be true with many areas of the country. You form a general idea based on what you have heard or seen and then come to the realization that your notions are based on false ideas.
Yes, as far as Texas goes, cattle and oil wells and mesquite trees are everywhere...they are Texas. And although I haven't been there yet, I know that idea is not true. It is very true that in many areas of life, preconceived thoughts keep us from taking risks and discovering new people, places and ideas.
So, are you hiring any city cowboys for your next cattle drive?...lol.

estherlou (3508) | 3 years ago | Texas has 268,601 sq. miles. There is the Big Bend Country full of deserts and prairies and mountains. The Hill country in the geological center of Texas goes from hilly to flat country with rivers, parks, lakes and vineyards. The Gulf coast hast 624 miles of coastline with peninsulas, islands and beaches. The Panhandle plains (that's where I am) is mostly totally flat land but has glorious sunsets, rivers, and canyons and scenic lakes. The Piney Woods or East Texas is full of lakes and roses, dogwoods and azaleas. The Region south of the Red River has praries and farmlands and 50 lakes and resevoirs and the Texas Motor Speedway for Nascar fans. The South Texas Plains goes from the Rio Grande Valley to San Antonio, and is where Texas meets Mexico in language, customs and cuisine. Golf, birdwatching, The Alamo and San Antonio's the River Walk. Wow! More things to see than I can write down here!

9. charlene2350 (4850) | 3 years ago | I grew up in Kingsbury New York. It was a little hamlet off from the city of Hudson Falls. It was between Hudson Falls and Fort Ann, NY. There was a petition once going around that the Upstate New Yorkers wanted to separate from the state of NY. They wanted to separate from New York city. NYC is so dirty looking, Hookers are standing out trying to get into cars and stuff. I lived in Brooklyn for 3 years and that was bad too. But Upstate wanted to break away and call themselves "Adirondack" or some other name, but since that area of NY was nestled in the middle of the the Adirondack Mountains, it was easy to see why they wanted to separate from the rest of the state. Well, it didn't happen, for whatever reason. Upstate New York is beautiful, picturesque. It is lovely. I grew up there. I live in the South now because I can't stand the cold winters there. I lived in farm country. It was nothing for me to go into the pasture and interact with the cows there as a kid. We also went into the pasture and played soft ball. The cows would just sort of back off in the backdrop and watch us. It was a fun time in my life.
When you think of a state such as NY, you do automatically think of the tall buildings and stuff. And when I think of Texas, I think of oil refineries. I saw plenty of them when I was there. I was mostly around Corpus Cristi.
Where I live there is no public transportation. If you don't have a car, you are out of luck, unless you want to pay a cab. I wouldn't know how to use public tranportation if we had it... just because I never learned how to travel that way when I lived in Brooklyn.

10. ElicBxn (15174) | 3 years ago | Or a ranch & a thousand head of cattle. Don't you know we still ride horses, have cattle drives & fight "Indians" (not from India of course) & "Mexicans." That the Alamo is out in the middle of nowhere (not downtown San Antonio.) We all wear ten gallon hats & cowboy boots with spurs!
At best we all drive pickups, but everything else is still the same.
