What A Lousy Day!!!

Bluebell Woods - A carpet of bluebells in the woods.

As it's Bank Holiday Monday, I invited my younger son and two of his kids to my place for an early, twelve o'clock, roast lunch, with the intention of taking them to Heaven Farm for the afternoon. Heaven Farm is on the edge of Ashdown Forest, near the Bluebell Railway, which is a steam railway, and near Sheffield Park, where some of the Sherlock Holmes films were shot. It is a working farm, with a lovely tea shop, a few animals, a few items of farm machinery and a picnic area, and then, if you walk down the hill, from the tea shop, you come into the bluebell woods. At this time of the year, the bluebells form a wonderful blue carpet in all the woodland areas in England and this year, they're early and in abundance. The scent of them as you walk through is great, too. There are several marks of interest in the woods, including a "Fairy Glen", and I love to walk through there. When you've circled the perimeter of the woods, crossing little streams and noting various articles of interest, you come to the top path which leads back to the exit. The path is between the edge of the woods and an enclosure of wallabies, which are, when they're active, very fascinating animals to the kids. We intended to meet up with my elder son and his two girls and have a family afternoon, which the kids and parents alike, could enjoy. But what happens??? I roll out of bed in the morning and it's blowing a quite strong wind and raining. I hung on for a bit, before making any decision but it's not very nice out there, so the typical Bank Holiday weather has done for use again.:-( However, we've been invited to my elder son's house for the afternoon, and tea, so the kids can meet up. That'll hopefully make up a bit for them not getting their outing. We could have taken them to the Wacky Warehouse but unfortunately, two of the girls are too tall for that. You can't win really, can you? How was your Bank Holiday weekend?

That sounds as though it would have been a perfect day for yourself, sons and grandchildren, I am sorry that the good old British weather has ruined it for you - isn't that just typical? I hope you still have a wonderful family afternoon! You make the Farm and the bluebell woods spring to life sweetheart - I would love to visit it someday - espescially the Fairy Glen, ny Grandad used to sing an old song called Morags Fairy Glen to me all the time when I was little! I have had a very quiet weekend with friends and family coming to see me so it was very nice even though I can't do anything much! Don't worry Sweetheart I have been resting a LOT - just like I have been told to! lol xxxx

Good, you need the rest to recover properly, Mummymo. Yes, it is typical of the British weather. All that warm sunshine we had in April seems to have been blown away by that horrible cold wind. Never mind... in three weeks time we have another Bank Holiday, so we shall try again. I'm glad you've had visitors over the weekend. It's nice to see people when you can't get up and go out, whenever you want to. Thank you for your response, my dear friend, and Brightest Blessings. xx

Darkwing, Heaven Farm sounds like a fairy tale land.I would love to see it.Your photo of the bluebells is great.I have bluebells in my yard that have been passed from grans to children and down through the years. They were (seeds)brought from Scotland to my Great gran because she used to tell my gramp how she loved them..He aranged for friends going to visit relatives to bring the seeds back.My ma told stories of Fairies hiding in the bluebells..I'm sure the story was to keep us from stomping through the flower beds... Thanks for this wonderful discriptive discussion.I find when I read your discussions I take a short visit with you down the paths...Thanks Hon xooxxoxoxo

Awwwwwwww, thank you Raydene. You know, that story about the faeries hiding in the bluebells? Your Ma and Grandma probably believed what they were telling you was true, because lore has it that faeries meet and dance among the bluebells. They usually do so at midnight though, but think on.... could your Ma have been speaking as she'd found? Hmmmmmmm. :-) Thank you for such a lovely response, my dear friend, and Brightest Blessings. Try leaving a gift for the faeries in your yard, and see what happens. :-)

I sure hope it picks up soon... at least in time for next Bank Holiday. Doubtless the bluebells will have gone by then though. :-( All that nice weather we've had and Bank Holiday weekend it has to be cold, windy and wet. Grrrrrrrr. Thank you for your response my friend. I hope you were well protected against the rain when you took Gissi out. Take care, love and hugggggs. x

Well, that would be nice Gabs, but I kind of promised my grandkids another try at Heaven Farm next Bank Holiday if the weather's better. That's a shame. I haven't been to Donny for quite a while now. :-)

LOL yup typical Bank holiday weather up here in Birmingham too. My partner and I had planned to go out and about over the weekend but the weather has been so cold and miserable we ended up clearing clutter in the house instead. We went out Saturday night, had a really good night, but Sunday was spend mooching and cleaning up. so far the highlight of the Bank holiday has been cleaning the bathroom :-(

Yes, we made the best of a poor situation. There was a women's football match on the tv, which my son and grandson enjoyed watching, Charlton v Arsenal women. lol. Then later, about 3 o'clock, we took the kids to the park just up the road, because the weather had brightened. It was far to late to go to Heaven Farm by then, so we went for tea at my other son's so the kids could still get together, which is quite a rare occurrence. Thank you for your response and Brightest Blessings.

Gosh what a pain for you hun! I've had a rather hectic one myself. I went to my a good friend's daughter's 7th birthday party Saturday afternoon and then on to a hen night in the evening. Got back home to London yesterday lunchtime and went straight out to my brother's birthday barbeque until about midnight last night. I am vegging out in front of the tv and/or computer today as I need to recover before going back to work tomorrow LOL! x

Wow... you've had a busy weekend, Anonymili! Yesterday was quite a busy one for me, but today was a bit of a disappointment. It did brighten up at about 3 o'clock but the farm shuts at 6 o'clock so it was too late really. :-( Never mind... there's another soon. We'll try again. Thank you for your response my friend, and Brightest Blessings.

That's an idea, but I'm not keen on going to the movies. I can't sit still in there long enough to see the movie through. lol. I thought of taking them to Wacky Warehouse, which is a soft play area, indoors, but two of the girls were too tall to be admitted. :-( Thank you for your response and ideas.

Medieval merchant market - market
Obviously you are in the UK, and I have been to Sheffield - years ago. We took a Saturday off and traveled a few hours from our West Virginia to the neighboring state of Ohio to attend a medieval-themed fair. It was blowing wind and clouds here also, but didnt keep away the crowds. We had a lovely afternoon watching the fighting demonstrations and sampling the foods. The market wasnt bad, either!:-)

Oh, that sounds wonderful. I would have loved to have visited a Medieval Fair. I have a friend who used to fight in mock battles in Medieval type battle dress. Unfortunately he is too sick now to still partake but he travels around with the group he used to demonstrate with, and still enjoys to watch, although his heart aches a bit with the thought of not being able to be a part of their demonstrations. I'm glad you enjoyed the day. I'm afraid my trip would have been ruined by the weather, but there'll be the next Bank Holiday, when I hope the weather will be more suitable. Thank you for your response and Brightest Blessings.

Lol... well done... I didn't even realise they had a website! It's just that it isn't too far from where I live and lovely countryside out that way. There are lovely views across the Weald because Heaven Farm is atop a hill, and it's a beautiful place. Never mind, we're going to try and go there next Bank Holiday, which is the end of this month. Hopefully the bluebells will still be out. :-)
