How is TODAY'S HOT TOPICS being decided ??

Hi all,
I am in a dilemma as to how the TODAY’S HOT TOPIC is being decided. At first, I thought its about the number of responses. I mean, more the number of responses, the more chance it has to make it to the hot topics. But then, what is then TODAY'S TOP DISCUSSIONS ??

I also cannot understand how do they decide Today's Hot Topic. Perhaps Jo unko (orgnaisers) ko pasad aatey hongey, unhey hot topic ki cagegory may rakh detey hongey.

When I first enjoy mylot I didn't know much things and I haven't friends,so the most of the time I response at hot or top discussions of the day.
I didn't understand how they decide what is hot or top.I thought hot is with the most responses at the day but later I find some discussion at top of the day with more response from the hot without being there.
I suppose it's like always hard to find how the things work here,of course moderator must have a system with a program but....
Anyway after i find friends here the truth is I don't go there at all for I response to a topic.I prefer my friends and if I have more time I go to new users or topics without response.I also don't care see my topics there.I saw one two time by luck but actually I never check to see if I'm front page lol:

i really appreciate aidonia.
as for me, i hardly get anytime after finishing off with my friends' and i don't really work extra to make it to the top discussions or to the hot topics, i don't mind it though. LOL..
whatever it may be, there's no harm in knowing things right. isn't it??

I think that TOP discussions are the most answered at last few minutes...
Let say that 10 people respond to your discussion during last 10 minutes...your discussion is going to be TOP discussion...

I have to agree that today's hot topics are based on the number of responses a discussion gets as most of the times when I peeped into that section ,I found discussions that were on the move for responses pouring in.As for the Top discussions,I think they include what Mylot things are some of the best discussions irrespective of the number of responses they get.

yes, even i have noticed that hot topics include discussions with hordes of responses, but as for the second part, myLot has to be on constant alert as to what's being posted every minute, that's as dificult as it gets!!

I think it might be done with a programmed software that rates the discussions and if the discussions meet the criteria of the algorithm ,then they get picked up as Hot topics.As the process could be automatic and not manual so it doesn't burden Mylot.

Hi Mimpi! I just viewed the Hot topics and top discussions today. And I noticed that the Hot topics had an average of 40-60 responses. So quite a lot of responses. And the Top discussions, had around 9-20 responses. But you can see that on the Top discussion, it seems like they are newly started discussions and are still gathering a lot of responses.
The Hot topics, I have seen some which were started by my friend yesterday or a day ago. For example, from my views ha, just making a wild hypothesis...~~lol "Becuti..." is both in the Hot and top topics today. Maybe because of her 60+ responses, so hot topics and top topics, because it's still gather a good rate of responses as of now. Which can be classify in the algorithm of mylot as still a top topic because many are still answering to the discussion.
Well some of my wild "trying to understand" Mylot hypothesis.~~lol So nothing serious ha...~~lol

well I think that they are decided depending both on the number of responses and on the fact that they were the last discussions who got a response...i mean if you are on the site when somebody has just posted a response to a discussion you may find it in the today's hot topic...but I am afraid I am not the best expert in this field!!!!

That is funny mimpi i was just thinking the same thing.
I wasn't here for a long time, so i just looked now at the hot topics of this day and the top discussions and wondered..and then i saw your post..lol..thank you:)
I think that today's hot topics are the topics of the last twenty four hours that got the best quantity responses.
about the top discussions are the ones that have the best quality responses, but it is a bit confusing, because i looked at some of them, and there are one liners there, and there are not that best responses there, so i can tell you that i am still confused.
If you get a better point of things. Please inform me, i will be glad:)

yes, its very confusing. today's hot topics thing is more or sorted out but the hot discussions is really confusing. don't you think, its very difficult for the moderators to keep track and actually decide on the quality responses?

At first I thought that today's top discussions were also based on the number of responses, like if you get about 7 or 6 responses successively, it would get on the top discussions but seeing what the other poster said about algorithms, maybe she's right.

Hi mimpi. I have been wondering about that too, a while back. But I forgot all about it until I saw your post. It made me go see both HOT AND TOP discussions. I really cannot fathom what is the difference. Some HOT topics are in the TOP. I guess topics become HOT if it garners a great number of responses within an hour then it goes to TOP as the number of responses increase??? Thanks and good day to you.
