My dog has started pooping in the room!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 95/100. ladyljs (670)   ranked 181 out of 7,859 in dogs 5 years ago

Lately when we leave the house, the dog will take the opportunity to poop in my little girls room.

I take him out frequently, but he "saves" it for later to "pay us back" for leaving him!

This is so aggravating!

He knows that he is in trouble when we get home, and hides in his bed for hours afterwards...but why is he doing this?

DO you have trouble with your dogs doing this?

my dog started doing that too. he started acting up when i got pregnant and it got so bad we got rid of him. i would only leave him a few min to go get the mail and would come back to a nice pile of poop. or he would pee on stuff right in front of us even if he'd just been out. now we are having problems with our newest dog. she is used to being in her crate when we leave...ever since we got her fixed, she freaks out in her cage. we came home to find it all bend to heck. its a metal cage, she was pulling at it with her teeth and had it all bent up. i'm starting to think we're crazy for getting a dog. lol

I don't think the dog is really capable of that mental thought--pay back.

Try to walk your dog, my dogs have a hard time going more then 3/4 mile before pooping. If you do this before leaving the house, your dog should be good for hours.

Feed the dog, then wait a bit..my older guy is a very short bit, but then take them for a walk and out it will come.

Who knows why he is doing this, but I really dont think its payback.I do not have a dog,so I dont know, but maybe taking him out twice before you leave the house might trick him into pooping the second time you take him out, also you could try feeding him earlier, thus making him need to poop sooner

I don't have dogs that do it I had a cat that was doing it in the end we had to give her back unfortunately but we had a little girl. What can you do?

Anyway I did do research and despite your usual reaction they are doing it to be naughty it is usually a stress reaction. We were told to buy Feliway whether you can buy this for dogs I don't know. Your dog is not doing it to be naughty he may have an illness or it may be stress. He needs a behaviourist we couldn't afford this. He doesn't need punnishment or rubbing his face in the dirt that will only make it worse. Anyway I did a google search and this is what I found.

I would expect this is due to some physical problem. It would be a good idea to have a fecal specimen checked by your veterinarian--that doesn't cost much. Also, has she been spayed? This kind of thing could happen when a female dog is in heat. She's 10 months old and it's springtime--good possibility she would be in heat about now.

Look to your food schedule, too, and the type of food. A dog at 10 months old is eating a lot of food in order to maintain growth--that amount will drop sharply, to roughly half the amount, in the next few months. Make sure you are keeping her at proper weight, and the food is good quality, not one that produces excess stool.

Dogs do not have as long an intestine as humans do, and they do not usually need the high fiber foods that are good for humans. The wrong dog food, too much dog food, or feeding her just one meal a day instead of at least two meals a day--any of those things could cause a problem like this.

Rethink your schedule for taking her outside too. It shouldn't be all up to her to tell you when she needs to go out. A schedule is a good idea, so that even if she has not asked, you take her out within a certain length of time. I give my dogs about eight chances a day to relieve themselves.

Otherwise, a dog might not think ahead enough, and lose control, or perhaps have too much trouble getting your attention because you are busy or she is shy due to just having gotten you mad--so many things can interfere, if you're leaving it all up to the dog to get your attention and persuade you to take her out.

One last thing to check on. Hip dyplasia is very common in certain breeds of dog. Even if both her parents had good hips, it is possible that she doesn't. With sore hips--or one sore hip--it can be painful for the dog to squat to relieve herself, and she may avoid doing it. Then she waits so long that it just comes out when she can no longer hold it. X-ray is the only absolute way to diagnose hip dysplasia, and if a dog is diagnosed young, the treatment options are greater.

Okay, I expect you'll find your answer in something above--and of course, if you don't quickly find the cause, talk to your veterinarian, too. I hope it goes well.

I forgot to mention as a total last resort you can lock them in a room with food, water and the litter tray. I don't know if you can do this with a dog and really you should check anything out first with your Vet.

Thank you for the information!

I know for a fact that this dog is holding it though! I can and have taken him outside for long periods of time, even several times, only to come inside, leave and have him do his business.

I know that he isn't capable of the " for spite" thinking...but he does know that if we all leave, he can "do it" in the house and not have to go outside and find a place! Therein lies the problem...LOL!

Thanks for your response...giving you and everyone else who answers a positive rating, but you are definitely in contention for best answer!

Thanks!

We used a rolled up newspaper and hit her nose a few times and then put her outside. After a while, she go the message.

He's not doing it as pay back - he's doing because when he actually needs to go, you're not there to take him out - he wont go when you take him outside unless he needs to.
You need to make sure you don't allow him to be in those bedrooms - shut all the doors to the rooms he's not allowed in to while you're away.
I have never had this problem with my dogs but a quick solution is to either shut him in your laundry while you're gone so he cant do any business throughout the house & make sure you have newspaper down for him.
If you make sure he knows he can do his business on the paper while you're away, he will learn to do it there. If you don't want him locked away while your out then you have to make sure all the bedroom doors are shut & have some newspaper put down by the back door so if he goes there waiting to be let out, he'll do his business there instead.
Good luck with that just don't stick his nose in it as some people do as you'll damage his sensitive sense of smell!

My dog TaTa would do this when we first got her. The vet explained that she was stressed because we had left home without her. She suggested that we try a couple of things to help destress TaTa. The first thing you can try is to her a safe place, such as a crate that she can stay in while you are gone. The other thing the she suggested was to give her her own special room that she stays in while we are away. In both places you leave her some food and water. We started giving TaTa her own special room. The first couple of days she had a few accidents but after that it has been smooth sailing.

I agree with the response above mine, your dog is probably nervous. How long have you had her? How old is he? I am wondering if he gets nervous that you won't be coming back or something.
I would try getting him acclimated to a crate. Maybe it would make him feel safer while you are out! My brother has a dog and they used to close him in the crate when they left the house, but now the dog is very comfortable in it, so they leave the door open and when they leave he still likes to go in there and sleep til they get back.

He is about 6 as far as we can tell, he is getting a little gray though and may be older.

We got him from the humane society when the kids were in kindergarten...so we have had him for 3 years.

He has been the perfect dog until this, so something is definitely getting to him! Maybe we need a doggy pyschologist!

It sounds like maybe hes jealous of your little girl, because she gets to go with you, but he doesn't. I have two cats, but no dogs, I do want one just cant have one where I live at right now.
