| |  It may have been. Russell will not pay dividends for a season or two (at least) and the Raiders, who need a lot of help, could have traded off that pick to get more picks and start seriously rebuilding the team. Potentially decent quarterbacks were still available later on in the draft if they needed and wanted one. Hopefully the Russell pick will pay off in the long run.

| | I agree about it not paying didvidends for a couple of years. That's why I think it's a bad idea to pick a QB with a Top 5 pick unless he's an absolute lock. Even then it's risky. With QB's they usually don't come into their own until a few years down the road. Meanwhile your paying them a lot of money just to be learning the ropes and making mistakes. By the time they become established NFL QB's there contract is expiring soon. So your lucky if you get 2-3 good years before you have to pony up some more dough. WR, RB's, DE, and linebackers I think give you more for your buck right away. | | Before the draft, I was thinking Johnson from GA Tech or Russell. I heard a rumour about a Moss for Packer's QB Jason Campbell trade possibility that I thought might happen. In that case, Johnson would have been the best pick or a trade would have been in order.
Because the trade never happened, I think Russell was the right pick. Was there another, better QB available? And, QB HAD to be the pick at that point: the Raiders are trying to build an offense...
