The FDA has now approved a shingles vaccine. The vaccine so far will only be offered to people ages 60 and over. The vaccine is still being studied as to how long immunity lasts. By the time I am old enough to get this vaccine it will have been around long enough for thorough research to have been done. If there are no terrible side effects and the vaccine is still around I would very much consider getting this vaccine for myself. My fiances grandad has had shingles now for almost 1 year. I have seen how much pain he has been in. He will get these sudden bursts of pain. He describes them as feeling as if someone is poking a hot poker into his chest. The doctors have told him that at his age he could have shingles for the rest of his life. After seeing everything he has been through and is continuing to go through I would consider this vaccine after the proper research has been done. How do you all feel about this new vaccine?

I hadn't heard about it, but it would be a great idea. My mother has had shingles many times, and there is almost nothing to relieve the pain. My younger sister had them about a month ago and was off work for awhile. I also knew a man at church who was out with a bad case for over 6 months. It was painful to wear clothes and painful to be without...just the air on your skin was painful. Shingles can be a terrible thing!

I wonder why it's only for folks over 60? I had shingles when I was in my forties. I didn't have it real bad, but I can imagine how bad it would have been if I were older and frail. I don't think they know enough about shingles. I got shingles after visiting my inlaws, and my father in law had shingles at the time, and he pulled up his pant leg to show me. I was only close enough to see, and didn't touch his leg. I started getting symptoms just a few weeks later. I've heard that they can come back, and so far they haven't, but every little pimply thing that turns up in the same area, I'm always watching to see if it's shingles again.

Aparently they haven't done enough studies on the vaccine in people under 60 to release the vaccine to that age range. I hope you don't have another flare up.

I think having lots of vaccines lowers peoples immune systems, so I wouldn't get this. My husband got shingles after a round of military vaccinations. I wouldn't wish that on anyone but he won't get anymore shots after being in the military.
