which do you prefer - north island or south island?

For those who have been there, or who live there, which do you prefer? I've heard that the north island has less spectacular scenary. However, it has activities such as zorbing that the south island doesn't.
I guess it also depends on what you're looking to do, viewing great mountains or participating more in adventure activities.
I've heard that most NZealanders live in the North, especially Auckland. But the south island is bigger?

I would love to visit New Zealand sometime but it is so far from England. I would hate the flight. Which island had more of the LOTR filmed on it? If I went all that way I would want to see as much as possible so would try to visit both islands.

I think the front of it was filmed in Hobbitown (north island) and most of the back in glenorchy (south island). actually, if you're a fan you would LOVE new zealand. the scenary is gorgeous even without thinking that it was the backdrop of such an awesome movie. But the fact that it is makes it all the more magical! And it's so pristine. And the folks so friendly!
