New York, New York  email this discussion to a friend?

The last time I was in New York was in October 1997. I recall that it was during those time that John Denver died in a plane crash. As many say, you have not been to America if you have not been to New York. New York is really a place of extreme modernity, of buildings, fashion, finance, ghettos, parks and bustles. Going around is easy. The avenues and streets are logically laid down, parrarels and perpendiculars. Though I stayed in Queens, going to Manhattan is easy and fast - with trains and buses. I was treated by a cousin the bests' of America's steak house and Lobster (forgot the name & The Palm) . I wish I could be back again.

There are many good places in New York, and it is mostly modernized with much of the more historical aspects lost.
There is a great deal to do, and yes many fine places to eat as there is such a huge variety of foods to choose from.

I was born and raised in NJ and only 20 minutes or so from NYC. However I don't think that I agree that "you have not been to America if you have not been to New York"

This is just one aspect of the United States, and one that is in many ways very different from other large cities, and certainly different from other states.

Besides the city there is also wonderful places in New York going upstate has plenty to offer. But most people here and in other places when they refer to New York are referring to the city not the state.

I have gone to other states, and gone to areas all very different from each other, and so I guess you have been to America if you have not been to New York but to some other parts of the country.

But I can well understand your enjoyment of the city. And not just Manhattan, some of the best restaurants are in Queens.

Hope you get the chance to visit the city again, since it seems to be something you want. Perhaps you will get the opportunity to see other parts of the country as well.

Despite the fact the Boston or Chicago are also major cities in the USA, they are very different from NYC. Same for Philadelphia, PA as well.

Then there are the areas that even when they are cities they have a different tone or feel to them such as Portland Oregon, or Denver Colorado.

And then there are the many places that are smaller but just as nice to visit.

There are certain things you can't seem to get in all parts of the country that you can get in the NYC area, and that is of course the good food, in great varieties.

There are places where you just can't get certain types of foods.

"New York City" is only a cliche and I agree with that, though it represents the extreme. I am from the Philippines and go there only for visits and tours. It is true that America has a lot to offer in terms of places, arts, history, sceneries and culture. I've been to the rural areas of West Virginia near Luray Caverns where an American friend comes from. We spent many weekends there while I was in D.C. studying back in the 80's. I've been to the beautiful woods at the back my cousin's house in Ben Salem Philadelphia. I've been to some other places like Glendale Heights in Illinois, Chicago City, Atlantic City, Tulsa, Oklahoma (where I trained at Thrifty rent a car),played golf at Douglaston, Forest Hills and Yes in Pebble Beach (expensive). I enjoyed persimmon picking at my cousin's farm in Oxnard, ate crabs at pier 39, dined in the Sausalitto, saw the whales at Seaworld, the Jaws at Universal Studios, sang with a band at Nashville. lost some hundred bucks at Las Vegas and dated some girls in LA. Picnics with former classmates are usual for San Diego visits. This is America for me - very memorable experience for an Asian guy like me. For me its the good life that many have never had,no even a glimpse. What I love most though is Monterey - where the cold sea breeze kiss our cheek as you watch the seagulls dive the waters while you drink cofee at the open roadside cafe. It brings one back to romantcism - the neat steets, the old houses, the lovers holding hands and the old style ways of the restaurants, the old trees, the flying birds that blend with the cloud-dotted blue sky.

LOL when you say that many do not get to see, you are right, you have seen far more of the country than I have.

Sounds like you know many people through out the country, and have enjoyed your visits.
