We have bought an older place late last year. The place was built in 1933, or maybe a little earlier. We have a fair bit of work to do on it. The first is the bathroom. The floor isnt that good. So it is pretty urgent. At the front of the house is a shop which we are doing up to open as well. So we are keeping busy. Best wishes

Good luck with your house and shop. There is so much character with the old house but to get one with a shop well done. While your busy your staying out of trouble.

I think that you could get some ideas from home depot, or possibly lowes. You could look on they're site, they might have some tips for you and your renovations.

My husband and I would love to buy an old house and renovate, but just can't afford it at the moment. Sorry I have never done any renovating really so I can't suggest any ideas. It sounds like a great idea though!

we have an 1860 victorian, and i have days where i'd like to shoot it. the 148 year old wallpaper resists all efforts to remove it,there's all kinds of layered surprises i didn't know were there.. the floors need refinishing and the wallpaper needs redone, but that's at the top of my renovating right now.we just had to have one of the 3 fireplaces redone because the old cement wore out.

The dream of me and the missus is to own a Victorian. Almost bought one (1874) a few years back. The price was fantastic, and it was mostly restored. But the owner didn't want to sell it to someone who wasn't going to move right in. We couldn't move in for 2 years....So we let that one go. A few months ago, we found a 3000+sq ft Georgian, brick three story (1904). Great construction, wooden floors, and beautiful...but there were too many hidden repairs needed: leaky roof (ceramic tiles), leaky foundation due to no gutters on the one side, and a gas leak. If the owners would have come down more, we would have taken it. But, the nature of my job decided that wasn't the house for us. So, I'll retire in four years....looking for that special house. By that time, I'll buy it in cash (at least thats the dream) since I've been saving for a house since 1992. They say renovating a house can make or break a marriage....both of us can't wait to restore a house!

This is so true my husband and I have had major disagreement over paint colour and floor boards. But when they are desided we love it. He always jokes to everyone that will listen that will keep it while we can fix it faster than it breaks. Good luck with finding your house I believe there is a house out there for everyone.

The only renovating tip that I have is dont do it!!! LOL we are renovating our house and it is alot bigger job than we expected, I have not enjoyed the renovating side of it but the finished rooms have been nice to see, we discovered suede effects paint which is brilliant for covering up walls with lots of little flaws in them, it is a textured paint and is just brilliant. We re plastered one room and it was alot harder than we thought it would be so we just covered the rest up with the suede effects paint. I will be glad in a month or so when we move into our new house which doesnt need any major work done on it like this one did. HOpe that you have lots of money as little jobs can turn into huge jobs with the blink of an eye!!

My husband say one step forward 2 steps back. I have grown up with old houses all my life unlike my husband and I think at times he feels this way. good luck in your new house and thanks for the tips with suede effect it a great idea and will use it in my lounge room.

We are considering purchasing an old home right now. It was built in 1860 but has been renovated somewhat. What are you looking to have done? This one is totally electric right now but wired for gas.
