Awhile ago I posted a discussion how the Pepsi-Co company was no longer going to experiment it products on animals to see their possible "harmful" effects. I didn't even know Pepsi-Co did--well I got an e-mail today from PETA, and it seems that Coca-Cola is going to join with them and no longer experiment on animals either..I include part of the e-mail to me (Quote from the PETA newsletter:) ..."Now, after hearing from PETA, PepsiCo's rival Coca-Cola has agreed to stop animal tests. Prior to our discussions, Coca-Cola had a history of conducting invasive and deadly animal experiments—including cutting open chimpanzees' faces in order to conduct taste tests and force-feeding chemicals to rats to test "caramel color"—none of which is necessary or required by law. Coca-Cola's senior vice president and chief innovation and technology officer, Danny Strickland, wrote to PETA on May 22 and stated, "I want to assure you that The Coca-Cola Company does not conduct animal tests and does not directly fund animal tests on its beverages. ... We are sending letters to our partners and research organizations who may conduct safety evaluations on ... ingredients insisting they use alternatives to animal testing." Strickland also addressed a deadly physiology test on taste reception in rats that PETA had discovered Coca-Cola was funding and said, "Recently senior management became aware that research involving rats was being conducted as part of a grant we had funded at Virginia Commonwealth University to study taste reception. We have contacted the University and have discontinued our funding." Coca-Cola's commitment not to fund tests on animals—and its instruction to its suppliers to use alternatives to animal testing—is a sign of hope for the millions of animals who are forced to endure cruel and unnecessary experiments every year. Coca-Cola joins PepsiCo, Welch's, Ocean Spray, POM Wonderful, and more than 22 other beverage companies that have pledged to PETA that they will not fund or conduct animal tests. Yet some food and beverage companies remain behind the times and continue to fund or conduct cruel and outdated tests on animals. Please take a moment to write to Unilever—maker of Lipton Tea and many other food products—and urge the company to follow Coca-Cola's lead in ending cruel animal tests for their foods, beverages, and ingredients.." Yikes though...you mean to tell me the makers of Lipton tea conduct experiments on animals? What the heck for?? Here's a link that discusses the Coca-cola decision http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/31/AR2007053100085.html?sub=AR

I'm really glad to read this. There is no reason for a drink or food company to test things on animals in such a way to hurt them. Hopefully more and more companies follow their example and find other alternatives for testing purposes.

Why not just choose people to test the products instead?? That would make more sense

I agree they can use humans to find out if the taste is good or not they don't need animals at all. I can't figure out why they'd use animals to begin with.

*throws out tea in cupboard* yikes..it makes no sense to me that they test on animals.declared safe for humans or not, just the fact they felt they needed to makes me question whether i really want to continue drinking the product. i'm glad more companies are stopping:)

Well thank goodness I haven't drunk either Pepsi or Coca cola in years..but it is stupid..the whole concept of testing on animals. HEY!!! I got a brilliant idea here!!!!! To show our disgust for Lipton tea still experimenting on animals how about a modern day version of the Boston Tea Party!! All those who want to boycott Lipton throw their tea in the nearest ocean or something

I am very opposed to any unnessary animal testing. I also would like to know how cutting open a chimpanzee.s face has anything to do with a taste test....?

I like to know that too...and the why of it..why inflict such horrible pain to an animal?? I can't see how it relates to a taste test either

Thanks for sharing this. I'm so glad they finally are willing to stop this abuse. I should call this abuse because animals can't tell them the taste so what's the face cutting for? Plus what kind of experiment about tea that animals can provide results for? I'm glad I never drink Lipton products ewww horrible!

I am glad to see that we are actually in the 21 st century here. It is about time they stopped animal usage in product testing. Why they have to use animals I don't know, but indirectly funding research is bad to and that stops as well.

At first I thought you were joking. Seriously, experiment on animals with a soft drink? What's there to experiment with? Now that I've read your discussion and see that it's serious, it's disgusting. I'm glad Coca-Cola will stop animal testing.
