How to place gif images in the avatar?

Its my wish to have in my avatar a gif image. What does one need to do for getting a gif image in his/her avatar.

I think the gif needs to be on a picture host and you can place the link of the gif.

Till now I thought Gif images can be placed here also as avatar. If that is not possible, you can save .gif image to .bmp and that can be placed i hope. and

I see many of the Avatars with gif images, even my avatar is a gif image, the flame in my avatar acts as a gif image only when you see it my profile, on places like start a discussion, or discussions my friends started etc, it looks like a sedate picture.
