I really enjoyed reading this list. I'm glad I learned English as a child because I'm not too sure I'd be able to now.

I don'y think I would classify it as a joke. To me it is a perfect example of why my foreign friends say that English is one the hardest languages to learn. We also have so many silent letters.

I know what you mean but my friend had sent it to me and classified it as a joke. I don't know why it would be classified that way because the things are true. Someone learning the language would have a whole lot to learn because of all the things involved in learning the language. As you say the silent letters that are in the language. Thanks for your response.

This is true though of many languages. I remember one summer when I was in graduate school I met a man who was studying Russian. I asked him if it was a hard language to learn and he said yes it was because the different pronunciations of a word spelled the same way. So it is not only English that has these words that look the same but have different meanings and pronunciations.

When I was in Tech school in the Air Force I met a few Turkish guys that were training there at school. I got to know them and they said that English is a hard language to learn. We had many a time at the dining hall that we would go through some of the words they didn't understand. I figure that if you are learning the language these kind of things present themselves. I had a spanish friend in Minot that said the same thing. Thanks for the response. I had my grandkids over the weekend so needless to say I wasn't on here very much at all.

This is very true of English language, though similar instances may be found in many other languages, to a lesser extent. I learnt English as a second language and still remember how difficult it was for me in the first few years, to come to terms with all the similar looking/sounding words. but once you gain some proficiency in it, English can simply be a marvelous language.
