You won't believe what my son just asked me!!!  email this discussion to a friend?

My boyfriend, Nick, has a $3000 go-kart. We live in a small town and he has been told by the cops that he can ride it in our neighborhood and by the railroad tracks, but not uptown. It has lights, turn signals, and 4 point seat belts, but it's not licensed, and it doesn't have an orange triangle so it's not street legal. Lately, Nick has been teaching my son, Ben, to drive it because it will be his when he graduates the 8th grade(maybe). Anyway, the jr/sr high school is out due to a gas leak, so 'the boy' is home. Ben just came and asked if he could drive the go-kart up to his friends house, on the other side of the tracks and across our main street. He got very argumentative when I said 'no'. DUH!!! Like I was going to have a different answer. He started getting irritated when I was explaining why not. Besides the legal issues to consider, the first time he drove it, he panicked and put himself and Nick into a sticker bush. Nick is at work, so we can't find out that I'm right when I say that Nick will say no, as well. Did I mention that Ben is 13!! I told him he's not even supposed to be driving it WITH Nick, let alone WITHOUT him. What are kids thinking these days???

Sounds like plain-old teenage rebellion against authority, yours and the local constabulatory.

Good news: It'll pass in several years.
Bad news: You've got several years to go and might just have to stick to your guns hardcore, alot.

Fortunately for me, he was brought up right. He doesn't disrespect his mom...yet. I'm waiting, but as long as he stays on task, he gets more freedom than he should at his age. If he keeps his head on, and his grades and behavior excellent, he gets the go-kart when he passes the 8th grade. One more school year to go.

He does push his boundaries, but I stand my ground. His father passed away when he was almost 5, but I have found a suitable replacement, so I have plenty of back-up. Plus, we live in a small town, so I usually find out what my kids are doing before they come home and tell me.

Thanks for your comment!!

Well, kids, especailly boys when hitting their teenage years will want to argue about everything. They want it and they feel they're old enough to handle it. Personaly, I dont think you need a reason to say no, NO should be good enough. Just stick to your guns and dont let him push you around. Take care, Terry

One of my favorite answers to the 'who, what, when, where, or why' question is- 'didn't I tell you already?' They have quit answering 'no' because my next comment is always 'must not have been any of your business'. I'm also pretty good at telling them(like my mom told me) 'I don't need a reason, I'm the mom'. In some instances I feel an explaination is required. I think a little insight of what might happen if you do something is important. 'Don't touch that' is not very good for a toddler. 'Don't touch it, it's hot' is better, right? Ben did not need an explaination in this instance, but I wasn't about to have him walk away and badmouth me without some cushion for myself. Am I making sense?? My boy has been an arguer since he could talk, and he is incredibly stubborn. He has always had it in his head that if he could reason something down to a point he could balance on, he should win the argument. I caught on a long time ago, but he has always been consistantly fine-tuning that skill.

Thanks for your insight.
