I read a lot of what is considered to be classical literature. Often when I buy books in the store they ask if I am buying books for class, and I am not! I just finished reading Ethan Frome and Selected Stories by Edith Wharton. I love her novels, they are filled with great characterizations and social commentary. Does anyone else out there read classics? What are some good one? Anyone else read Edith Wharton? Whats you favorite novel of hers? I like House of Mirth--except its so sad.

I read Ethan Frome in college and loved it. I thought it was a classic, and it is. I've not read much of Wharton's work, but I've heard she emphasizes the plight of the upper class, particularly in the House of Mirth. I thought about reading that book, but don't have the time. What's it about?

Its about a girl who is born into the upper class, but her family loses their money. The only way she can live in the manner she has been raised is to marry rich. She is very beautiful so it is possible for her to get a rich husband--her only problem is that she has an internal conflict, she is in love with a lawyer who is not rich and she wants to marry him. It a good book and the movie that came out a couple of years ago in no way does it justice.
