when in your life were you fittest/healthiest?  email this discussion to a friend?

Just wondering if you can remember a time in your life when you were the fittest. For instance, when you jogged the most regularly. Or could run the furthest distance (how far?). Or could swim everyday for a certain number of laps.

For me, the fittest point in my life was when i went for a 21 day outward bound school course. We did distance running every evening and speed running every morning. It got to a point at the end when i could run 11km in about 1 hour.

I often look back and wish i were that fit again. the nearest i got was to running 10k in 2004 in 1 hr 15 mins. hoping to do another 10k sometime soon.

for most singaporean men it is probably their national service days. but maybe for some it was in school when they were in the school team for some competitive sport? anyone represented their country?

Haha! I've actually been thinking about this lately. I think I was most fit my senior year in high school. After school I would go to my job working in a warehouse. A warehouse with no air conditioning! It would get to a max of 120 degrees in there. You couldn't even get your pants off to go tinkle! LOL Plus my mom would make me mow the lawn (push mower, not self propelled) before I could go anywhere on the weekends. Our lawn was about 3 acres then. I wish I still looked that good (and tan.)

haha - i guess sometimes extreme fitness is just for a certain period on our lives, never to be revisited. (:

One summer I was living on my college campus and swimming laps 3 days a week and lifting weights in between days. By the end of the summer I was swimming more than 20 laps in an hour. Part of why I'm not fast is that I just can't do the end of the lane turns. I'm going to have to get lessons from someone.

I didn't even realize what good shape I was in until we were moving out, and my roommate could barely manage to carry her mini-fridge downstairs and I had no problem. Also I went hiking with my mom who runs 2 miles (in a hilly area) every day, and she was having to keep up with me.

My husband was in great shape just before entering military training and during basic. Since then, he works so many hours that he doesn't have time to work out. And for some reason, even though every other squadron has a mandatory workout time during their day, his doesn't.

When I started cycling to work my fitness improved. I could cycle the 6 miles in about 20 minutes in good traffic.
Then I got a new job 15 miles away and I started to cycle there and 6 miles seemed stupidly easy after that.
When we started to drive to work after moving 50 miles away,I would swim every evening and could do 3 miles at one point. I think I was about 24 by that time.
I would say that was when I was the fittest ever.

cycling through traffic sounds challenging. But i guess if traffic is not to heavy it's alright.

LOL it was in London and so was pretty heavy most days but much better than waiting for over an hour for a bus each way.

London?! that's really tough. I always get freaked out by the black cab drivers, and that's as a pedestrian. Well, you must have been a good careful cyclist. I don't envy anyone who has to drive in London. It's manic.

It was a bit manic but there were the parks to ride through.
I would rather ride there though where cyclists are more common than here where road users treat us as a menace to be taught a lesson.Even the cycle paths are dangerous here,with drain covers and holes and people parking over them.

well i think when i was around 26 or 27 years old and i have to work abroad. i am in a band singing nightly and dancing as well, imagining singing 15 songs that we are required to dance as well. it was not easy but you have to be physically fit to do it.

yes it is and no matter how plenty i eat, i burn all of that during practise and during the actual show.

Yea LOL... I was fittest during my NS time.

Fit enough to be in the competitive team for the Army Half Marathon. But those were the days.

Now I need to make sure I won't faint while running lol. Just kidding lah. :P

fwah - that's impressive. i have a friend who has run the marathon 5 or 6 times. and he runs 5k every morning before going to work. it all takes lots of discipline...

My last year of college I was on the rowing team (crew team).
I was the coxswain, rather than a rower..the coxswain stters, motivates and pretty much acts as the coach in the boat while the coach is on the shore. Even though you don't row, I still worked out withthe team. So everyday there was running and weights. I was very fit and since conzswains have a minimu weight that they can be, I worked hard to be right at the minimum to make things easier for me crew. It was a lot of hard work....I'm not nearly that fit now, as I have an office job and spend a lot of time sitting.

yeah in singapore there's something similar called dragon boat racing. the cox also beats a drum to keep the rowers in sync. i had a friend who was into canoeing and he was super fit then.

I was at my fittest when I was in college. I was in my last year of college and I was student teaching. I would bring very healthy lunches with me to school. When I got done teaching, I would go to the gym everyday before heading home. Unfortunately, that gym closed down and my fitness has gone to pot.

going to the gym is really the best way to put your body to work. it's so inspiring to see others work out , too. plus, eating healthy food at the same time really helps a lot. that's how i do it, too last year. and i am planning in doing exercises regularly, too soon... anne

I know that the gym is the best, but we don't have on in our area anymore. I can't jog since I have gotten older my knees are always aching. I have started walking though.

When I was around 30, I still had weight from when I had my last baby who was then around five. I decided to start eating right, walking and doing strength training and weight lifting. I lost the weight, over 30 pounds in three months. I was walking eight to ten miles a day, and excersizing and eating right.

It worked so well, I quit. LOL

Actually, I then had to get a job to support myself and my kids so I didn't have time anymore, although for the most part I did keep the weight off.

wow three months is fast! My pregnant friends tell me that one of the worst parts is water retention. they had swollen ankles and couldn't fit into their nice shoes!

i hope you can do the 10k run again soon. i know you can do it squaretile. just a little push and encouragement is all you need.

anyway, the fittest and healthiest time i had ever been was early last year when i enrolled myself in a 3 month course in the gym. not to lose weight but to gain weight.

i do have ischemia (some kind of heart disease). and even if people see me already as a sexy and slim person, deep inside, i suffer from my disease. and so, i go to the gym everyday and focus more on the cardiovascular exercises. during those days, i felt really good and healthy.

and i am gonna get back to jogging as soon as i am able to migrate to sweden which is just like more than a couple of weeks from today. jogging is good for the heart, too!... anne
