I'm looking to invest in a digital SLR camera. I have my eye on the Nikon D40, which runs for about $545 - on sale. Does anyone here have a digital SLR and if so, do you like it

Hi Mare73, Sorry to see you have already decided on the best response. You should maybe wait just a little longer before you select the best response to give everyone a chance! I prefer the Nikon SLR range of cameras. Personally I have the D50, but really aim to get the D80 soon. The bottomline, however is that the quality of the lenses you buy is much more important than the camera body itself. A good lens allows enough light to pass through it to produce properly-illuminated and sharply defined images on film with short exposure times. There are varying degrees of “good” lenses - sort of a good, better, best range. Sharp lenses that are very fast, for example, generally cost much more. When we say a lens is fast, it’s a reference to its largest aperture, or widest possible opening. A fast lens has a very wide maximum opening, allowing more light to pass through the lens, therefore permitting the photographer to use faster shutter speeds or to shoot in dimmer light. Generally, the larger a lens’s maximum aperture, the more expensive the lens is.

I have no idea how some, well actually many of the features here work!!! I'm new as you can see. So maybe I should go for the D50? There's a place here locally that offers different types of classes for digital cameras so you know exactly how to use them. I've wanted one of these cameras for as long as I can remember. I'm definitely going to invest in the camera and the class. I'm going to the Adirondacks in September and with the leaves changing, I know it will be a beautiful time to take pictures. I shall let you know what I decide.

I love mine. Once you get one, you'll wonder what took you so long to switch from film. I have a Canon Digital Rebel. I would caution you, though, on the Nikon D40. If you buy that camera and later want to upgrade, you'll have to upgrade all your lenses, as well. The Nikon D80 would allow you to upgrade only the body. Canon's also allow you to upgrade bodies without having to upgrade lenses. Also, used lenses for the D40 will be rare right now, as it's still a new camera. The D80, or even the D50, uses the same lenses as other Nikon's. Enjoy.
