Your basic options for home are as follows:
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) - usually by the Telephone company. Like BellSouth or other Licensed Exchange Carriers (LEC's). Some companies, like Earthlink, are CLEC's which basically charge $10 extra. Good speeds, okay price.
Cable: usually by your cable provider, like Comcast or Charter. GREAT speeds, GREAT price.
The two above are usually restricted based on location. www.broadbandreports.com can give you your options.
A third option, Sattelite, is okay. It has slower speeds and costs more, but is available just about everywhere.

You can get cable or dsl. I do not know about India, but here in Canada it depends on where you are, what is best. Cable is faster, but sometimes it is not available in your area. Even if there are both choices, it will depend on who gives you the better services. For instance in my city in Manitoba, the cable providers give the best customer service, whereas in my in-law's city is Saskatchewan, the dsl provider gives the best service. Hope that helps.
