Can Turkey become a member of the European Union? |
| |
| Turkey has started negotiations to become a member of the EU - European Union. But is Turkey really a "European" nation? Is the culture just too different from the other nations? What does Turkey need to do to be accepted as a new member of the EU? | | | | | |

| | Honestly I don't know much about Turkey, it has always intrigued me because when compared to Canada it does seem like an exotic land! I would love to travel there sometime. Having said that, with the European Union I think it all has to do with money. They don't care about your culture, it is all about creating a unified monetary unit. It would make things so much easier for trade and consumers, business, and workers, vacationers etc... to only have to use 1 currency anywhere in the world. Also it would help out because instead of having to worry about what the exchange rate is from here to there it would all be the same. Also no offence is meant by this but if Poland can become part of the EU I can't see why Turkey can't. | | | | | | |

| | The EU has told Turkey it needs to address certain issues such as human rights before they can be considered for membership of the EU. Although Turkey is officially a secular country Turkey would be the only "Muslim" country in the European Union and it would have to agree to certain international laws that currently are in contrast to the ways things are done there. | | | |

| | Hi FT: Part of Turkey is in Europe so it should be able to join the EU. The cultures of all the countries of the EU are different. Is Greece the same as France, or England the same as Italy? Ivor | | | | | | |

| | This is a rather simplified view though. The EU has certain rules that member states must adhere to and at present Turkey comes a long way from meeting those requirements. | | | |

| | The EU has already set down the conditions for Turkey's membership. It is up to Turkey to meet those conditions if they still wish to gain membership. | | | |

| | I thought if your country was in Europe you could be a member of the EU. What are the other conditions? | | | |

| | Since it is a "union" then the countries must largely agree and aim for political, economic and monetary accord. The Copenhagen Criteria set out the conditions for a new country to be acceptable for membership. Thy should have - stable institutions - a functioning market economy - adherence to the aims of the EU They must have secular and democratic government and rule of law that oversees corresponding freedoms and rights. When new countires wish to join there is a period when they need to work to prove they meet these requirements. During this period the European Commission reports on how the countries meet these criteria to the European Council. Critics say that Turkey cannot be allowed to join because - they have a poor record of protecting the rights of minorities within Turkey, predominantly the Kurds - they prevent freedom of religion because of enforced secularism - only a tiny fraction of Turkey soil lies within "Europe" - Turkey continues to occupy Northern Cyprus, even though a UN resolution declared the act invalid - Turkey refuses to accpet the legitimacy of the Republic of Cyprus which is a legitimate EU and UN member state. | | | |
