Holding the Colors Close | | | | This photo was taken on June 14th which is Flag Day in the United States. Old and worn out American flags are retired with fire and ceremony. The flags are disassembled. The red stripes are then put into the fire first. The white stripes are given to the fire second and finally the blue field is given up. This photo captured one of the Girl Scouts holding and giving the blue field a final hug. | | I thought it was great. It is so nice seeing young kids being taught how to respect our flag.I have seen so may disrespect it.i didn't even know our flags were supposed to be disassembled first. | | | | | | | royal52gens (3634)

| | Yes, the flag is disassembled first. This is why it is so different from burning a flag in effigy. When the red stripes are presented to the fire, we remember the blood that has been spilled to fight for and to protect our country. The white stripes stand for loyalty to our country. The blue field has a special meaning also. I can't remember it right now. Did you know that when a flag is folded, each fold has a special meaning also? I will do a discussion on this, so keep an eye out for that one. *wink* | | | | 66jerseygirl (1960)

| | It is rare to see people with enough respect for our flag to dispose of it in a proper way. I have seen our flag being flown upside down, etc. It is so disheartening. It seems as though the girl in your picture truly knows the significance of the flag.It shows to me a somber young girl reflecting on the significance of our flag and all it represents. Being a former military brat, we learned the proper fold and disposal via the military. Retirement date for the flags is normally June 14th., Flag Day. The process for retirement is to have a prayer service and then retire the flags by proper burning. Here are the reasons for each fold, I also included the link to where it can be seen in the entire ceremony process: The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered in to the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded. The tenth fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God we Trust." http://www.privatehenryka... | A properly folded flag. May we all learn to respec

| | That all matches the "Stars and Stripes Folding Ceremony" (author unknown) that I have sitting right here on my desk. The one I have on my desk has a little more written on it. On the back is even more information. I received this from our local VFW. They use this ceremony at funerals of local veterans and at their own Flag Day ceremony. I will be posting this ceremony in the Girl Scout Interest group so other Girl Scout leaders can be aware of it, can print it and can use it in their ceremony. I hope you will look for it and correct any errors I make. I did notice that yours has been up-dated to reflect our women/daughters in service. I think that is good. | | | | misheleen73 (3135)
