I have never had a 4th of July party, and it seems more and more people keep inviting themselves. It just happens that you get to see a huge fireworks display right from my back yard. I don't know what to have to eat, how to decorate..ect...I am going to have all ages from teenagers on up...encluding a cheerleading squad and dates, to parents. Please help....

anything in the colors of red, white and blue of course, be it store bought stripped banners or just some rolls of crepe paper streamed all around. perhaps even some red, white, blue balloons.

as for what food to serve. i would just go with the traditional hot dogs and hamburgers. especially since it sounds like you are going to have a lot of ppl..its much cheaper to feed a LOT of ppl with those two than to try and buy steaks or even chicken for that many ppl.
if you dont have membership to Sams Club or Costco...look for a Smart and Final in your area. they are restaurant food/supply stores that DO NOT need a membership to buy from. and they will carry those big packages of hotdogs, buns, burger..even 5 gallon tubs of potato salad etc. and you can buy plastic utensils..even soda there. they will pretty much have everything you might need.

hope you find what you're looking for!

Thanks for your great ideas. Your right about the hamburger and hot dogs. Their cheap! Plus it doesn't take much to throw more on the grill if more people show up or get hungry. I didn't think about buying the food in bulk, but I think that is the way to go! Thanks for your help!

Parties and picnics are so much fun! I like salads with mayo better (potato and macaroni), but for picnics, I usually prefer making a pasta salad, and that's usually a hit. If you're not making burgers and hot dogs, ham salad always a hit around here. For light dessert, I like fruit salad or watermellon for picnics. Have fun!

I really like the idea of fruit salad. Everybody seems to like fruit salad. And watermellon sounds good. It always sounds good to me..LOL...I like to cut a slice of watermellon, then cut that slice up like you would a pizza only bigger pieces, and it's easy to do and easy for people to pick up and eat. Thanks for your ideas!

Oh, I would keep it simple. I have lots of intricate grilling recipes if you ever need them, but really, go for the easy stuff...hot dogs, burgers, brats, various salads. If you think you not doning a big enough spread with the easy stuff, make a toppings bar with all the veggie toppings, tomato, lettece, onion etc, and bring out the various mustards, salsa, bacon, some canned chili, something to make the burgers and dogs custom. You could also buy a huge bag of snack sized party wings and grill 'em up, I have lots of recipes for that too!

Or, just make it a pot luck? You provide the meats, they bring thier fav sides? Just make share you ask if they're brining side or desert, so you're not faced with too much of one or the other. Sounds like fun! Wish I could go! LOL

Oh I love it...make a topping bar!!! That would really be easy to do and everybody can help themselves. You have some great ideas...and you are more than welcome to come!!! It will be fun!

We did the topping bar for my B-day BBQ last year and it was a big hit! I cooked up some bacon and everything! YUM! I also wanted to pop by and see if you want my cucumber salad recipe. It's like homemade pickles, but I think better, super easy and a real crowd pleaser. Just say the word!

WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! Are those the right words? LOL

UR Funny! LOL here goes...

Brinda's Cucumber Salad

1/4 cup sugar
1-3 clove garlic, minced ( I like more )
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt (to taste, it can be sweet)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 white vinegar
Mix with a wooden spoon, or nonreactive

1/3 cup chopped red onion (or more)
handful of fresh cilantro, chopped
1-4 cucumbers, sliced or diced.

Ok, so the "marinade" is hard to double, but you can do it if you have to, just let it sit and taste as you add. You can use english or hot house cucumbers, but don't put them in the marinade the night before, morning of is better. When I make it, I make the marinade, and double the cucumbers and just stir it down to hit all the goodness. Regular cucumbers hold up in the marinade overnight just fine.

I hope you love it! I found a recipe and changed it to this one, the cilantro brings something special, but you can knock it down if you're not in to it. Let me know how it goes!

Oh I can't wait to try it, and if I love it, (which it sounds like I am going to) do I have to share it? I don't share well....LOL

Obviously you should decorate with red white and blue. Party City or the Dollar is a good place for decorations. I think I would try to find some of those plastic lights in red, white and blue. www.Orientaltradingpost.com has some really nice things but you will have to order fast.
I would ask everyone, especially those who invited themselves, to bring a dish to pass and if you are short on money, I might even ask them to pay 5.oo or so to help cover the cost of the meat and drinks. That might discourage them from inviting themselves again next year too.

myLot reputation of 99/100. sodapop (432)   ranked 1,024 out of 8,636 in cooking  5 years ago

There is a good idea! I always ask them to bring a bag of chips, or snacks, or even a 12 pack of soda...some do, some over do it, and some don't bring anything at all. It sounds like you are speaking from experience about how to discourage them next time. Thanks for your ideas.

myLot reputation of 46/100. WhatsHerName (1726)   ranked 1,591 out of 8,636 in cooking  5 years ago

You are welcome.
Actually I have never had this happen, I don't ever have parties. But I put myself in your shoes and thought about what I might do and decided I would charge them or, have no food at all, or maybe I would go in the house and eat locking the door behind me. I have no problem being rude to rude people, it's just wrong and rude to invite yourself to someones party. I'll bet they leave a huge mess and never stay behind to help clean up either do they?

Make sure you have lots of soda and water on hand, and maybe even some iced tea. We always do the hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, and we also have on hand potato salad, chips and dips, garlic bread, and lots of other little snack type items. For the decor, I pretty much use anything that has the red/white/blue theme such as ribbons, streamers, flags, napkins, plates, etc...ANYTHING. The dollar store is an awesome place to find the perfect decorations for it. So what time should I be there? LOL
