Did anyone watch the Democratic debates last night at Howard University? |
| |
| I saw the debates on PBS and they were kind of interesting. Most of the candidates were pandering to the mostly black audience (which is what politicians do) but I did hear some things that I liked. Gravel was funny. I like his stance on the Drug War, and well most of what he said. But having him stand up and attack everyone in his own party will not help him get elected. I doubt the American public will go for someone who can't play well with others. Hilary by far got the loudest and most appluase which is surprising considering that Obama is black and proclaimed himself a child of the Civil Rights movement. Considering the audience I expected him to do far better. He needs a few more years to perfect his shtick me thinks. Dennis Kusinch I liked as well. He is very smart and has a lot of great ideas. He is however frail and doesn't seem very "Presidential." Biden on the other seems both smart and Presidential, but like the rest they are trailing so far behind Clinton, Obama and Edward that they will need Richard Dean moment from their competion to gain any ground. On the subject of Edwards, he is smooth as ever and I mean that in a good way. I still like the guy, but I doubt he has any hope. The canadates did for the most part agree on the following topics: Ending the War in Iraq. Repeaing the Bush tax cuts to wealthy, and instead giving tax cuts to the middle class. Rebulding New Orleans and putting fema directly under the Presdent again. Universal Healthcare for everyone Education for everyone. Stopping the genocide in Darfour. So what are your thoughts on the debates, the candadates, or the issues themselves? Btw I'm still pulling for Ron Paul... | | | | | |

| | Hello, filmbuff!:-) I didn't see the debate but I'll surely read the contents from online and will come back if I have any more thing to say. I just stopped by to say that, I really liked the diplomatic way you presented each candidate, praising everybody on the list:-) It makes you no less capable than other candidates,LOL. since politics has reduced to rhetoric for the most part, so you just fit in quite well. If I were an American, I would probably agree on almost all the points you presented as their agreed upon points. but then, there is always more conflict on how to do the things than what to do:-) Well done filmbuff! for your presentation:-) | | | | | | |

| | I'll be glad to nominate you my secretary of state, filmbuff!:-) If I could gather that much amount;-). By the way, I can't debate much about candidates at the moment. Usually I get to study possible presidential personalities a little before the start of active campaign. I do know some of them though. If you want to discuss the issues, however, both for and against then probably it will need many other separate discussions!? what do you think? If you think they can be discussed here, then we will:-) | | | |

| | Keep an eye on Gravel, he is pro-rfid. I'm not even going there with Hillary... Edward is out, there's no way he'll get voted in after that stunt he pulled with the $400 haircut after telling citizens to tighten their belts and cut down on consuming and spending. Obama...not sure about him yet, I feel leery of him but it's more a feeling than anything, so I can't really make a concrete opinion on him at this time. I've not seen or heard anything on Biden or Dean, and get the feeling they are the democratic equivalents to the Republicans' Thompson and Thompson...nothing more than distractions and extras to make competition appear a little beefier...IMO. Just so people are aware, I'm not a Republican or a Democrat, tho I come from a long line of die-hard democrats, I am neither and refuse to label myself or choose a candidate bases on anything other than their own merit. ...and I, too am pulling for Ron Paul. | | | | | | |

| | Have to agree with you for the most part. I did like Kunsinch though, he would make a good president but I really think Hilary Clinton has the Democratic Ticket locked up. Which is bad because I don't think she will get elected. On gravel, he's a straight shooter but I can't help but wonder who put him up to trashing everyone. He was great comic relief though. Btw what is rfid that Gravel is in favor of? | | | |

| | I didn't see the debates, but I agree with all the issues they were in agreement with. I'm not confident that we will ever get universal healthcare, tax cuts, or education for everyone, but it looks like there may be more hope now than there ever has been in the past. I don't know who I like best. I have to admit, I'm not nearly as up on the current political candidates as I should be. As long as the democrats get back in office fast and Bush finally hits the road, I am pretty open to anything else. I know one of my downfalls is that I am so opinionated about general politics but I don't ever learn enough about our political leaders. Something I need to work on. | | | | | | |

| | I'm keeping my fingers crossed on Universal Healthcare. We are the only industrialized nation that doesn't have it at this point and with Michael Moore's Sicko in release now I think it's becoming a real issue. Democrats, especially Hilary Clinton has been backing this idea for a long, long time back to when her husband was president. I'm actually backing a republican candidate at this point in Ron Paul. I kind've doubt he will make the final ticket though, so I'll probably be voteing democrat.... | | | |

| | I need to start paying more attention. I don't think I could ever vote republican, but I need to learn more about the democratic candidates and what they stand for. As far as universal health care goes, I wonder how we can be so forward and ahead of the times in so many things and so antiquated in some others. I think a change in our health care system will be a huge step forward. | | | |

| | I am a Republican but I don't that way most of the time, especially of late with the current administration. What I like about Ron Paul (republican) is that he is a throw back to the real Republicans of old, such at Abraham Lincoln. He believes in ending the drug war, ending the war in iraq, fiscal responsiblity, and total immigration reform...among other things. He's not a neocon/moral majority type. That being said he will probably not get on the ticket since his own party is doing everything possible to keep him out of debates, the media and the caucuses. The democratic candidates are hard to follow. The reason I say that is that all for the most part sound alike. They all agree on the same topics. At the debate it was like this for each candidate when it was there time to talk, "I agree with all of what my competitor said and would like to add blah blah blah." Hilary is the clear frontrunner. The question is: is America ready to elect a woman president? If so, are they willing to elect Hilary? I'm not so sure, but I'm positive she would make a better president than the standard Republican fare. | | | |

| | If we get a democrat in office this time, who do you think is the next choice after Hillary? I wonder if people might vote for her just as a way to get Bill back in office? I bet many probably think that way. I wonder how much influence he would have once she did get elected? I have no problem with a black president or a woman president but I'm definitely a liberal and would probably be fine with a goat being in office if they were qualified to run it. Race and gender should have no bearing. I think even more interesting than Hillary being the first female president will be that she's the first ever wife of a former president to make it in. Imagine the things Martha Washington, Elinore Roosevelt, and even Jackie Kennedy could have done had they been given the opportunity. | | | |

| | I did view the highlights, filmbuff, and was very impressed with Hillary. She has upgraded her image and seems to be toning down some of the shrill quality that would turn voters off. I, like you, don't think that Obama is quite ready. He does not have the experience it takes yet. I liked Edwards, but I don't see him getting the nomination. Kuchinich is popular in some circles, but doesn't have the star power. I have heard a lot about Ron Paul, but have not made up my mind about him. I think that Hillary will be a shoo-in. | | | | | | |

| | I agree with you, I think Hilary has the democratic nomination locked up. I'm just not sure she can actually win the presidency because there are so many that just plain don't like or trust her. I'm afraid of who will win the Republican nomination.... | | | |
