the function of the liver in digestion and absorption will be presented...metabolic function will be discussed later in this chapter...the liver functions in digestion by the secretion of bile....because bile contains substances that are discharge into the internal environvent it is an excretion as well....from 600 to 800 ml of bile are formed each day...drainage of all of the bile secreted each day results in the loss of the fluid and requires its replacement....in addition to water, the important constituent s of bile are cholesterol, bile salts, bile pigments, and lecithin....because the biliary tract is lined with mucous membrane, bile contains some mucous...bile formed in the liver is conveyed by a serious of channels or ducts to the doudenum...liver cells are arranged around ducts that joined together to form....larger ducts and finally leave the liver as the hepatic duct...the hepatic duct branches to form the cystic duct leading to the gallbladder where bile is stored and concentrated...the duct formed by the hepatic and cystic ducts is the common bile duct...it opens usually in common with the duct of wirsung from the pancreas, into the duodenum...the terminal portion of the common bile duct and the duct of wirsung are known as the ampulla of vater...the opening into the duodenum is guarded by a muscle called the spincter of oddi...
