I may have just dodged a bullet email this discussion to a friend?

Recently, I'd been talking with a friend of mine about Quixtar, a popular multi-level marketing company. Basically, it's just an online retail store, similar to Amazon.com or something like that, and you make a% of the profits you bring in for the company, by getting people to buy from the store and also from signing up other distributors who in turn get more people to buy from the store.

I'm not advertising this company, I just wanted to inform you all about how it works. Now onto the real reason I posted this. You see, my friend who told me about all this isn't the over-enthusiastic type that these companies often employ. He's basically like me, open minded and not necessarily quick to judge, but also skeptical and wary at the same time. Well, I found out that there's an annual fee while reading through some registration material. Now I know this kind of marketing only profits you if you basically act like a salesman and tell everyone you know about it. Well, I wasn't too thrilled about that aspect of it anyway, and after hearing that there's a fee (I don't know how big it is though, it didn't say), I wanted to get some more info.

That's how I found out that Dateline actually investigated Quixtar and the video I saw was a little disturbing. First of all, the people who get rich from this don't get rich from the system they created at all, they get rich by selling motivational audio tapes/CDs, DVDs, and books. Second of all, and quite creepy, is that there were clips from seminars the company held. I thought they'd be a buisness-like setting with maybe some charts and graphs and the like, probably discussing market trends. Well, it turns out it's basically a religious experience for a lot of the people there, candles and yelling, chanting, and all kinds of insanity. The main Quixtar spokesman is like a crazed televangelist, shouting and really working the crowd into a frenzy.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share this with you and see what you think. If you want a link to the video I watched, just ask in a comment since I can't yet copy and paste, so I don't really feel like typing it out at the moment. I know this post was super long, but I had to get it off my chest and let people know.

What do you think about all this?

I was presented with Quixtar years back when it first came out. It is actually an extension of Amway (I believe when Amway decided to go online Quixtar was what emerged). There are a lot of spin offs of Quixtar which are basically the "teams" that have evolved from Quixtar. I don't doubt that people make money doing it, but it's a pretty tough sell and you're right, most of the money is generated through seminar ticket sales and motivational/developmental tapes, etc.
