I know I packed two extra blouses and a pair of slacks, large sized. I am positive th4e crew of the ship did not take them, but it was quite a while before they brought my luggage and somebody had cut off the lock, so I checked and found I was missing a blouse, a t=shirt, and a pair of heavy black pair of pants. We were on the Alaska cruise and we are not rich, in fact we saved for it. I just can't roll all my clothes into a small suitcase and certainly I do not want to put the lap top I intend to buy into a suitcase to be stolen. I checked the internet and this seems to be a problem with baggage handlers stealing. Is this common? And is it more than jewelry, laptops, and other expensive items? Do they steal clothes as well, especially if they are new? And how do I report it?

Since you were in a cruise I would report it to management there, that's horrible. I know it happens when I visit the Dominican Republic (where I'm originally from). They have a bunch of silly rules of things you can't bring in, so they like to open up your suitcase to look through your things and make sure you aren't bringing any of it. We always have to be very watchful because sometimes they might try and sneak something out of it without you being aware, and keep it.
I definitely think it does happen, a lot more often than one would assume. You have enough proof of theft because of the broken lock, I think you should definitely contact the customer care section of the cruise, and have them lead you in the proper direction and help you with what action to take next. No one should get away with that.

I found my blouse, t-shirt, and pants. Apparently the baggage handler did take it out, and searched through my stuff, but then he or she put it in one of my husband's suitcases, the ones where he put some extra trousers. Since my husband and I are about the same size, my husband probably thought they were his and the baggage handler stuffed the blouse and t-shirt underneath.

Oh I'm so glad you at least found your stuff! I would still file a complaint though, the professional thing to do when your bag is searched is to at least leave a proper paper or something that documents the name of the person and/or company that searched it, that also provides information on where you can go or call if something might be missing or broken. That was so unprofessional, I would still be a little annoyed.
At least you can be thankful you found your belongings though!

We did get a present broken, so maybe I should have asked if they put a notice that anything breakable should be carried on instead of being in the luggage compartment.
