NEW YORK and VERMONT  | |  My guy and I will be travelling through Northern NY and through Vermont as well. Wew go right through lots of little places such as (in NY) Messena, Ogdensburg, Mooers, (in Vermont) we go through Rouses Point, St Albens, and then over and through St Johns Bury) Basically we go across the upper north part of NY, cross at Rouses POint and then go diagonally through Vermont to arrive in NH.
It is about a 7 hour drive and we normally do it without stopping but I see all of these nice places we pass and was wondering if maybe there were some locals that live within these areas that could offer advice on what there is to see or do along the way. Or good places to stop and eat... Maybe even a good cost effective but clean B&B perhaps??

 PunkyMcPunk (1093) | 3 years ago | Thanks. I appreciate the post. You see my boyfriend lives in NH and I am in Ontario (Canada) and we usually take the main highways to get to his place... Although it is faster, it only takes us 5 hours, we end up having to go further east and then back track south westerly to get to his home. But it is quicker and easy to follow.
Well the gas prices have been getting outragious and since you live in England I know I don't have to tell you about that as your gas prices are far worse than Canadian prices.. But we decided to try a different route, so we googled it and found a route through Vermont and NY that while it is 2 hours longer uses LESS gas (by almost half a bloody tank) and is so much prettier.
I kind of thought maybe there might be some locals around here that could give us a few pointers on nice thigns to do or see.... Let's Hope!

His family has a vacation home there. its a small town, but there are some cool places to eat such as Phoenix on the Bay and Hacketts which are both down town. i also like stopping at the jones' farm which is on highway 37, which you would take to messena. There is also a winery, which is new, on highway 37, in red mills, right pass odgensburg (again on th way to messena). Hope you have fun!

I know this is a somewhat ancient discussion, but I just found it and I have questions about the trip you took (and the trips after that) as well as suggestions for your next trip.
I looked at the route you took, and I completely follow your logic. Besides, a lot of times, taking the more scenic route is more enjoyable anyway. Did you find some things to do in Ogdensburg? Did you try the winery that ma_belle suggested? What other great finds did you stumble across in your journeys?
My suggestion for you is that on one of your trips (maybe during peak fall foliage), cut south a bit sooner than VT, and pick up Route 3 in NY so you can visit Lake Placid. It's just beautiful, and a quite romantic as well. Lodging in the hotels can be pricey (and having the winter olympics there twice didn't help to lower the prices), but there are plenty of B&Bs along the way if that's more your style. We absolutely LOVE going there. If you go in the winter, the amount of snow they get there is just unbelievable, and the whole place turns into a snowmobiling community. There are plenty of good places to eat there too. You can go to www.lakeplacid.com to learn more about the area (including places to stay and where to eat).
Then...
Follow Route 3 to Plattsburgh, and take the ferry to Grand Isle (no gas required!). Head toward Burlington, pick up 89, and stop off in Waterbury to take the Ben and Jerry's factory tour and do some quality assurance testing. Then pick up Route 2 and head toward your final destination!

| Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I live about two hours south of you. We spend as many weekends as possible in the Bay in the summer (with the occasional trip to Kingston), and we (try to) take an annual winter trip to Lake Placid.
Don't hesitate to let me know if you have questions about the area, and if nothing else, please come back and tell me where you stayed and what you enjoyed (or what you hated, so we can avoid it!) while you were there.

| | 5.  maliki2 (252) | 2 years ago |  I live in the St. Albans area, but I'm from Burlington. So I've been in Vermont most of my life. If you drive through St. Albans, I would look at eating at Chow Bellas. It is located in downtown St. Albans on Main Street. The food and menu are excellent.
It is a nice sit down type of restaurant and on some days they have a musician. And it won't break the bank.
