My hubby and I went to buy additional blue (recycling)boxes and saw some composters for sale. We had been thinking about them before, but were worried about attracting vermin and raccoons. Have you used composters? Please share your experience and thanks in advannce! :-}

As long as you do not add animals produce you should not have any animals problems. I try to put my vegetable scraps in the garden and let the earth worms take care of them. I have found that this is a good way to do it as well as increasing the earthworm population. I do not use commercial fertilizers on my garden as I do not wish to ill the good bacteria and worms that are turning the scraps in to good compost.

It's good to get a compost container with a tight fitting lid. I have raccoons around my house and when I put things like melon rinds and corn cobs on my open leaf pile, they come around at night and get them. Racoons are so destructive, I'd liike to discourage them. Kitchen scraps can be really good for your compost, because all the minerals and elements we get from food is needed in compost too. For example, banana peels will add phosphorus, eggshells provide calcium, etc. Just never put any meat, bones or fat into the composter.

We just had a compost pile in the back of the yard. I've never used a composter myself.

I would imagine as long as you have a good, tight fitting lid on it you should be fine. Just don't put any kind of meat or fat scraps in it. Plant scraps are fine. I'm not sure about eggshells.

Once you get it going you will enjoy the benefits. It will help your garden and save you loads of money.

You are so funny! Well, my blondie friend I luv ya anyway. To get back to composters: they are like a trash bin that you keep in the back garden, and you fill it with all your organic rubbish. Then with heat, humidity, and earthworms, you get lovely loam in a few weeks' time!:-D

I just pile the vegetable and salad refuge along with leaves and grass at the side of our house. My husband does not want to buy a composter and I certainly do not have the money to get one, priorities and all that. I consider my Apple Macbook Pro and my Bluetooth wireless headset as more important. The city does put them on for sale, the composters that is, for about ten dollars regular price but they still cost a third of my pension.

I have been reading up since then about composting and some of the materials I found suggest just getting a container with an open bottom that you can pile all your organic refuse inside, protected from animals. You can buy earthworms and "seed" your pile. I agree that the plastic ones can cost a bit much. I think that for all the taxes we pay, the government can supply each household with a composter, if they are serious about recycling. They supply the blue box and the green bin, why not a composter?

You can also enclose chicken wire and make a large (4 foot diameter circle) and put it in an out of the way place and then just keep filling it with organic materials (no bones meat or fat)/ Keep it moist and as long as it is in ground the worms should find their way into the compost pile. If you have enough room then yo can make a really large circle of chicken wire that is tall enough so that raccoon and other unwanted animals cannot get in. When you have a pretty good pile , yo can let some domestic rabbits go in there to turn the pile, leave rabbit manure and break down larger green leaves for the compost pile. The rabbits will get fed and keep warm at thee same time.
