Have You Ever Named A Household Appliance Etc.? | | | | I don't normally do this, but have on occasion. A few years ago, we had an upright vacuum from Sears, that was purchased as a floor model. It turned out to be 'a real lemon.' We returned it for one of the same make and model, but one that'd never been used. We should've left it in the cardboard box it came in. It too was 'a lemon,' and had the 'habit' of regularly gulping up everything in its path. It seemed to have a mind of its own, and would end up with smoke spewing out of it, and the belts breaking and burning rubber, on a regular basis. I named it 'Jaws.' We 'had to' replace it, and passed it on to a friend for use at his place of business. He contacted me one day, and said, "Jaws died." I knew exactly what he meant. What name(s) have you given to appliances and such, and for what reason(s)? | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | I guess doing this type of thing is 'weird' for some people SuffocatingAngel, but I find it can be fun too, and a great stress reliever at times ... especially when 'Jaws' was gulping up everything in sight. I can relate to the 'mixing up names' part, as I do this type of thing on a regular basis, with people. | | we don't normally do that either. but years ago, we named some of our very old appliances out of sheer sarcasm probably. :) we had an old fan that had seen better days. then suddenly, it made an awful sound coz it needs some oiling. there were days it was doing fine, there were days when it shrieked. we named it "asthmatic" in a local language. then when another fan became the same as asthmatic, we called it "asthmatic's brother", again in a local language, which seemed funny at the time. after that, everytime we have an asthma patient in our household... meaning an old fan... we call it "asthmatic's relative". :) | | | | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | I love the way you named all of the old fans in your home, mylesnarvaez. What was the name you gave them in your local language? Do you have any 'asthmatic's relatives' in your home at the moment? Thanks for your response. | | | | mylesnarvaez (2481)

| | asthma means "hika" in my language. asthmatic is "hikain". asthmatic's brother is "kapatid ni hikain". asthmatic's relative is "kamag-anak ni hikain". i think the last of their relatives gave up on life last year at the old family house. :) | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | Oh yes, someonesmom, we do this all the time. Doesn't every one? We call our television 'the magic picture maker'. We have been amazed by the different things that it does. We have a big screen television that we call 'the big magic picture maker.' We have a table with a green felt top and cup holders at every corner and midway through each side. We love to eat on this table because the cup holders are so convenient, and there is also a stick that came with it that allows us to pass things to each other without having to get up or lean too far. We call this table, 'Jealousy' because it's top is green and we know from the looks that our friends give us when they come over to eat that they are green with envy over our awesome table! I have a printer for my computer that I call, 'Mr. Jams' because it jams every time I try to use it. I have a mulching / chipper outside that I use to chip trees and branches into mulch. I call it 'The Skipper Chipper' because I bought it for such a good deal at an estate auction a couple of years ago. It used to belong to a guy who was a ship's captain. He was at sea most of the time, but he had a nice house in the country, and he bought this chipper to aid him in his land clearing. Unfortunately, he got his clothing caught in it one day and it ate him up. Yes, quite ghastly. He should have stayed at sea. Still, it makes for a nice name, 'The Skipper Chipper.' Let's see. What other appliances do I have that I name? Oh! There's 'Sir Poopsalot' I bet you can guess what that is. I spend a lot of time with Sir Poopsalot, especially after eating a spicy meal. The whole family uses Sir Poopsalot every day. I call my remote control, 'Flipper' after the popular magic picture maker show about the dolphin. Our microwave is named, 'Nuker,' because we feel like we are Nuking the food. We call our air conditioner, 'The Black Hole' because it consumes so much money. The rear left eye on my stove top is called, 'Pokey' because it pokes along when I'm in a hurry to cook something. I'm sure that I can think of some more as I interact with my home today, someonesmom. I'll get back to you on this. ;) | | | | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | Hehehehehehe, Transdisc, and hahahaha, too! This is the most hilarious thing I've read in awhile, and thanks so much for it. I'm sure it'll help to make mummymo's day, as well. I'm really envious too, of 'Jealousy,' and I'd so love to come to dinner at your place, and dine on this table. Have you been watching the 'Beverley Hillbillies' again ... remember Granny's 'fancy eating table?' I have a young friend here (I think you know who I mean ... a certain 6 year old), and 'she' has some questions for you. Here they are ... Are you 'really' a bear? What do you call your sink, your soap, your bed, and your couch? I'm looking forward to more from you, on this stimulating topic, as you interact with your home. Thanks again, and for being 'the friend that you are too.':) | | | | Transdisc (18434)

| | I'm so glad that you picked up on the Beverly Hillbillies reference, someonesmom -- I just knew that you would! I forgot to mention the cement pond out back, but I don't have a nickname for it. Wait! Maybe I do. When my children were younger we would swim in the cement pond and play a game called, 'The Preacher From the Black Lagoon.' Of course, it was supposed to be 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' but they had no reference for that and they thought I meant 'Preacher' since i was a preacher, I guess. One day they asked me to please, daddy, play 'preacher from the black lagoon' with us!! I couldn't stop laughing and the name stuck to this day. So I guess my cement pond is The Black Lagoon. The couch? Grouchy. It's where the bear spends his time. I bet your little friend can come up with a lot better names than I could on such short notice. Am I really a bear? Some times. ;) | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | Thanks, Transdisc. My young friend will be happy to hear the name of your couch tomorrow, but will 'still' expect answers to her other questions. I can't believe that you named your couch 'after yourself.' You, grouchy ... never! I'm glad I'll be able to report to her, that you're only a bear 'sometimes.' She looked at me with such earnestness, when she asked if you 'really' are a bear. I love the way kids think, and there's just no substitute for this innocent time of their (our) lives. Sorry, I'm waxing philosophical here. "The Preacher From The Black Lagoon?" I love it! I'll have to get ahold of some Hillbillies reruns.:) How long did it take you to come up with all of the names of these household items? If they're just for the benefit of this discussion ... great, and if not, wow! Keep working on the 'other requests' for my friend (if you have the time). She even asked for the name you call your soap ... quite the character. Thanks again. | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | You've given me a tough assignment, someonesmom, especially since I made up most of that stuff. I don't have a Skipper Chipper, or a fancy dining table. Mr. Jams is appropriate, but I just made it up in honor of Jaws. I do call my remote control Flipper, but for other reasons. I do call the eye on the stove, Pokey. That one is true. I refer to cooking in the microwave as Nuking the food, but that's it. Sir Poopsalot is not the toilet, but is how I refer to one of my pets. I was trying to give your discussion a kick start, especially since so many others seemed to think it odd to name things like you suggested. I actually don't think that it's odd at all. The tough assignment relates to your little friend. Grouch the Couch. She may go for that. How about Sneaky the Soap? It's always getting away from me. The sink? That's a tough one. I'm thinking that the sink could be a wily old bear's drinking trough. Hmm. I'll have to think on that one. Am I really a bear? I'm like a teddy bear. A good friend in time of need and comfort. Sometimes I really feel like the bear in my avatar photo. Ask your friend how that bear feels -- that ought to be revealing. I would love to hear her response to that one. If you must, tell her that I am not a bear. After all, my claws would be too big to manipulate the keyboard. I am merely a human. No magical bear powers here. I am a man who often feels like the bear in the picture. | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | Thanks Transdisc. I'll reveal your answers to her later today, and will ask her about your avatar picture. I agree with you 100 percent, about 'the kind of bear that you say you are.':) Keep thinking of that sink name.;) I appreciate your confirmation that it's 'not' strange to name certain items. It's just a lot of fun.:) | | | | mummymo (11642)

| | Hi Transdisc, I asked your question of my young friend, and she said (with her head down, and in a small voice), that 'the bear' looks sad and scared. I suggested, maybe 'he's' hiding from something. She's a very bright little girl, and I don't mean because I think this is how 'you' perceive yourself, but just mean to say she's bright. She loved your name for your soap, and it brought a big grin to her face. By the way, not long after she arrived, she went over to the computer, and said, "Do you think your friend, the bear, answered my questions?" | | | | someonesmom (2277)

| | Your little friends answer is how I suspected she would respond. I see different things in the bear according to my own moods. Some days he is sad and scared, some days he is simply bothered, other days he is just sleeping, and still other days he is very intent on a good game of peek a boo. I'm glad that I was able to provide her with some entertainment. I have though of a name for the sink -- Stinky the Sinky. You can guess why. Thanks for your kind words, mummymo. I feel the same about you and someonesmom. You are both always a delight for me and have often made my day. :) | | | | heavenschild (1715)

| | I'm so sorry, mummymo, and I certainly didn't want you to hurt yourself. It saddens me to think that you're in so much pain, and I'll continue to keep you in my prayers. Any word on that MRI yet? As you can see, 'our friend' is going to pay a return visit, so that should be 'very interesting.' My young friend is a little girl I've babysat from the time she was 8 mo. old. She's going into the first grade in the fall. Her dad's been laid off since the end of April, and because of this, so have I. I have her back for this week (anyway). She noticed 'the bear' avatar, and asked me about it, so the questions in his response are really hers. I told her he'd likely have the answers for her tomorrow. Please take care of yourself. xxx | | | | mummymo (11642)
