Birth Control after having a baby |
|
Which is the best to take while breastfeeding? I got the depo shot, and it messed me all up! I was on my period for a solid 7 months straight. I only got the shot one time. After 3 months, I switched to ortho tri cyclin. I also quit breastfeeding. It still didn't stop my period, so after being on my period for 6 months total, I switched to lo-estrin 24. After a couple weeks, I finally stoped my period for a week and a half, then was on in for a week and have now been off my period for about a month and a half. Err, my system is all messed up. Anyone else have these problems or any recommendations?

1. GardenGerty (20235) | 3 years ago | I would recommend calling your doctor, and seeing what they say is going on. I am a lot older than you are, and when I had my kids it was recommended that you only use barrier methods and/or rhythm methods while nursing. With all the messups of the FDA saying drugs are safe and effective while they kill people and cause cancers, I still would make that choice if I had infants. You do not know what those hormones in your body will do in the way of booby trapping them in the future. I would be concerned, if I were you, about the continued bleeding, and the possibility that it would make you anemic. One remedy for the extra bleeding is actually to take iron to build your blood. The other thing is to get plenty of Vitamin K. I have never looked for it as a supplement, but I know that leafy greens are one of the major sources. Vitamin K is the injection you usually ( at least used to) are given right after delivery, to help you start clotting. When I started prolonged bleeding, again remembering I am much older than you, they gave me progesterone, which slowed it down. When I went off, I had worse cramps than labor ever caused, and upon further examination, it was discovered I had fibroids. During the surgery they found I had severe endometriosis. I would also look at my diet, if I were you, and see if anything I was eating had plant estrogens (soy). I am not a doctor, but in your shoes I would be knocking on the doctor's door, wanting a good explanation. Good luck to you, and let us know what happens.

tiffthone (105) | 3 years ago | Thanks for the advice. I've talked with my doctor through out this, and he said that we're just going to have to play around with different types of birth control. I'm going to see him again this week, and tell him what's been going on since the last time I saw him when he put me on the lo-estrin.

| 4. heavenzcwgrl1 (5) | 3 years ago | I have 5 children and have had all kinds of different B/C. I took the depo shot also and had terrible side effects, and most of my friends said the same. After having my tubes tied...............and then a baby 2 1/2 years later (I am soo glad I have her) my doctor suggested an IUD (Mirena) they have a 5 or 10 year. We opted for the 5 year and I have had 0 problems. I had break thru bleeding for the first 2 months and have had no period since. No weight gain, no headaches. It has worked great for me.

tiffthone (105) | 3 years ago | That's good. Only thing about the IUD is I'd freak out about not having a period. Plus I have a history of ovarian cysts too, and I've heard that cysts are a possible side effect from it.

8. happy2bmommy (249) | 3 years ago | oh you poor thing! i would hate to be on my period for so long! for me, things work the opposite. once i am on the shot, my period goes away. i knew that after i had my second son, that i wanted to get back on the shot. my life is so hectic already, i dont want another little thing to mess with. i would rather it just be gone. so it is. was this your first time trying the depo shot? i have read and heard of stories where the shot actually acts like a poison to our bodies. instead of making things easier (no period), it actually makes things worse, like what you described. i have a friend who tried the shot also, and only had it done once. she had her period for 6 months straight! i felt so bad for her because i was the one who talked her into trying this kind of birth control. i guess we all have to find the right one that works with our bodies. i cant do birth control pills because if i miss a couple in a row, i will end up pregnant. i know from experience...BUT it was done on purpose.

9. nishdan01 (2347) | 3 years ago | Bith control by barrier method is the best so far. Pills and all these shots have side effects. Webmd says this about depo shot: Depo-Provera can cause a number of side effects, including:
Irregular menstrual periods, or no periods at all Headaches Nervousness Depression Dizziness Acne Changes in appetite Weight gain Excessive growth of facial and body hair Hair loss Loss of bone mineral density Most of the side effects are not common. Change in the menstrual cycle is the most common side effect. You may experience irregular bleeding or spotting. After a year of use, about 50% of women will stop getting their periods. Their periods usually return when they discontinue the shots.
Prolonged use of Depo-Provera may result in loss of significant bone mineral density, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. This risk is more likely for those who have been taking it for longer than 2 years, particularly when other risk factors for osteoporosis exist, such as family history and chronic alcohol and/or tobacco use. Although there are no studies to benefit its use, it is advised that all women on Depo-Provera get adequate calcium and Vitamin D (through diet and/or supplements) to help prevent osteoporosis.
Disadvantages to using Depo-Provera include:
It can cause unwanted side effects. It does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It can cause irregular menstrual periods. You need to stop taking Depo-Provera several months ahead of time if you plan to become pregnant. Regular doctor visits can be inconvenient.
So you better discontinue and switch to someother method. Did you doctor tell about all these I mentioned? Before trying something new, always seek advice from 5 diffrerent people.
