In India, there are more boys than girls, Statistics for the Delhi area say that there are only 869 females born every 1000 males. This gender discrepancy is due to abortions of baby girls and their susceptibility to fatal diseases and other unexplained causes of death. Since 1994, there has been a ban on prenatal gender screening but because of poverty, the practice continues. Girls are considered an expense while boys can make a living and support the family. How does it sound to you?

This is very sad and I think that when the 1000 males grow up there will not be enough wifes for them. Tradition is valued but I think males and females are equally good for a modern family living in India. Girls can be quite loving and pleasant to have in a family. A boy is more likely get a good career and support his family. A girl is likely to get married and not support her family. I am not at all surprised that there has been a ban on prenatal gender screening. Does this practice continue illegally?
I live in the UK and have a 12 year old son and an 8 month old son. I would dearly like to have daughter. I had a 20 week scan in my first pregnancy. It was not hospital policy to reveal the gender. I decided on a private scan at 17 weeks during my second pregnancy. I was disappointed not to be having a girl. But I can't imagine having an abortion. That would be wrong for me but I respect other people's ideas. I had my baby son in May 2007 and love him. He is a dear little baby boy.
I think it would be awful if a boy or girl could be chosen before pregnancy. Every lady in India would choose a boy. This would tip the natural balance of 50% male and 50% female. I think every one is born for a reason and imagine if Shakespeare hadn't been born! Mother Teresa was a woman that did many good things for India. I think either attitudes should change or the little girls should go for adoption to a loving family rather than be aborted.

Hello dear jegen. I think that it is not the only case in your country. It is the same with China as the percentage between girls and boys are not balanced because of the one-child policy that many girls are aborted before they were born before they could see the world. It is so sad a thing to talk about. I am worried that the imbalance of the genders will be sure to cause some problems later when the young generation of the nineties are grown up and old enough to get married. They will not have enough ladies for men to be their partners. We have to take it into serious consideration.

There are far too many Indian boys and girls. India really needs to do something about their explosive population growth. At the rate the worlds population is growing, and China and India are the worst offenders, their is not going to be enough food supply to support the entire population.
