I was disappointed with the book and the movie both, but the movie was wretched. The book felt very much like Anne Rice was under deadline to finish and so she did, but did not deliver the quality and depth to the work that she had with her previous books (and not just in this series). Anne Rice possesses the abiltiy to provide a compelling story with stimulation subplots peppered with enough history to develop the characters believeably. Her work is usually full of so much detail that you can feel the texture of the setee on which Lestat might sit. This last in the series failed to meet that expectation.

I can't believe no one responded to this discussion. First of all, I'm a huge fan of Anne Rices' Vampire Chronicles and I'm sorry about her position today on her older novels.
I think Lestat is one of the most complex and paradoxal characters from modern literature and the way she exposed every little aspect about him was wonderfull.
I wasn;t dissapointed at all by the book "Queen of the Damned". I was dissapointed about the movie though. It seemed just a flashy of special effects and make-up, stripping away the best part of the book: the story itslef. I guess that happend because they tried to make a 2 hour movie from 2 of Annes' books: The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned.
The movie raced accros the key moments, jumping from feeding moments to destruction moments, killing the plot line. If I woulnd't have read the books before, I wouldn't have understood a single thing from that movie! Plus, their choice for Lestat was horrible! The character was missing exactly that charisma Lestat has in the books. Besides Aliyah all the actors were misfits in my eyes.
As for the book, I don't understand why you said the book was rushed. It felt to me like it perfectly completed The Vampire Lestat and developed at a normal pace.
