Need orginization tips | | | | I live with my husband and two little boys in basically one room, 12´ x 15´. We have a second, smaller room where my toddler sleeps, but we live in the main room and the rest of us also sleep there. The kitchen area is outside. I need help with ideas for keeping the clutter down. Every day, it just gets worse, no matter how often I clean. I´m going a bit nuts trying to control the mess, because we simply don´t have enough space for everything! Here is what we have for furniture in the main room: - a large entertainment center with 3 doors for storage underneath (full of movies and papers) - 2 computer desks - a double bed (shoes and such under the bed) - a small bookshelf beside the bed - the baby´s bassinet on top of two chairs - a table in one corner that holds our groceries because the dogs get into kitchen - a large wardrobe with four drawers and a narrow closet space. My husband, baby and I share this and it doesn´t hold all of our clothes. In my toddler´s room is where all the laundry piles up because we simply don´t have anywhere to put it. The main problem is that my boys are just 17 months apart and so I can´t get rid of the older one´s clothing that is too small because it will shortly fit the little one! We are in the (very slow) process of building another main room in front, but that won´t be done for ages, so in the meantime, any ideas would be much appreciated.

| | there are lots of websites about organizing, but when I moved from a three bedroom house to one room at my mom's house (when she became unable to live alone) I went through this same problem. Of course, i had to put most of my stuff in storage, but still have a clutter problem. I am a horrid packrat which does not help matters lol.. so here are some of my hnts.. loo up, then down.. a lot of space goes unused up on the walls/ceilings and down under stuff.. put shelves up on your walls.. I started with cheap ones I made myself and slowly bought the ones with adjustable shelves.. put them from the ceiling down to say a foot and a half above furniture you sit/lie on and a foot or so above the other furniture.. get some kind of boxes that will fit under every piece of furniture that doesn't sit flat on the floor.. you can even use old cardboard boxes, cut the four corners down to the height you want, then fold in the sides, you can trim the new 'top flaps' to suit you, use these for the underbed especially, not just tuck the shoes under.. I can store almost all my linens, my shoes, and even some of the out of season (or in your case hand-me-down) clothes under my bed.. do you need two desks? how about one a bit larger that can hold both computers side by side or facing each other.. use those hanging baskets they sell for vegetables to hold all sorts of things, lightwieght groceries in the kitchen, desk clutter (hang over the desk).. extend that bookcase up to the ceiling, put seldom used stuff up higher where it's harder to get to.you said the doggies get into the kitchen, could you store stuff in there that they would not bother? think outside the box.. look at every piece of furniture and every room or space without thinking 'kitchen' 'desk' etc. think 'room' 'big box for computer' etc.. just because it's a kitchen, no law says it has to hold only groceries. look at every room like a box and forget the 'it's a kitchen' type of thinking. if you or hubby are handy, you can build much of this stuff, maybe even from scraps from the addition being built to save money. I hate decluttering but it is worth it, I keep telling myself that anyway.. start in one corner and work around the room.. gather up all of a thing (clothes or food or books, etc.) separate into 'keep' 'throw away' and 'give away' piles.. toss or give away those pile IMMEDIATELY, while you are disgusted and tired, or they'll just end up being put back into the clutter.. this is a great time to figure out what goes where and what you need to make or build.. look at every single tiny inch of space and think of how to use it.. most closets have a shelf on the top. is there room for another above that one? you can fake temporary shelves with lightweight wood and bricks, books, or even food cans to hold them up. once you start to get a handle on the mess, go into the 'get one, toss one' mode.. for every single thing you bring into the house (except food) you have to throw away or give away one thing.. I wish you luck, decluttering is my most hated task lol.. do a web search for 'clutter', 'decluttering' or 'clutter control' and you'll get lots of good ideas.. when you see the sites that want to sell you shelves, storage boxes and such, think of ways you can make them yourself to save money.. oh, and rig up a couple of fabric or net 'hammocks' to hang up from the ceiling to hold lightweight stuff like toys and lightweight foods...

| | oh, one more hint, don't forget the doors, get a couple of those shelves that hang over the doors to hold little stuff, perhaps those things that are now under the entertainment center so you can use that space for heavier things.. and put a shelf ove every doorframe, usually you can get a foot or so of space there too. | | | | GuateMom (1018)

| | Thanks! That is some great info there. We do have a lot of unused wall space, especially up high. Maybe cupboards with doors would be good so things don´t look so cluttered. I was thinking that I could also paint the shelves and cupboards the same color as the wall so they don´t stand out too much. The hanging baskets for the kitchen is an EXCELLENT idea. That would allow me to put my veggies up out of reach of the animals! I could also use them to hold my son´s art supplies. Thank you very much for your tips. :D | | | | wdkptr (487)
