How can my husband get a job on a commercial fishing boat?  email this discussion to a friend?

He's wanting better money & he's had no luck getting a job overseas. Someone suggested Alaska, but what about the ones that go out of like Maryland, Texas (right?) is that an option?

Also, how would I search on the net for it...like "help wanted" + fishing job or something like that...

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!
Bea

Hi Mary -

I don't know where you live, but here locally there are Maritime companies and temp agencies (Manpower is one of them) that hire for such jobs. Often the people on the ship have to received certain training before going on the ship and many community colleges offer the programs. The name you probably want to search under is Maritime training or Maritime jobs. Here is one online resource: http://www.maritimejobs.com/ You may be able to look in your local newspaper. I know here there are ships - New Orleans - and in Port Allen, LA (I think it is in LA, it is really close to the LA/TX border). You may want to check other port cities -> Houston, TX; Savannah, GA. Maybe even the Discovery Channel website since they have the shows about crab fishing.

I have a friend whose husband is a ship Captain and he loves it. She likes the job because he is gone a lot and she prefers to set her own schedule. That is one thing about such a job, depending on what type ship he gets on they can be gone for long periods of time. He was working 2 weeks on/2 weeks off, then went back to his regular schedule of 3 weeks (at least) on and 1 week off.
