The rise in drug-resistant bacteria is alarming! email this discussion to a friend?

I am a lab tech and work in a Dr's clinic. I did my clinicals at a refernce lab and we kept a list of the drug resistant forms of Staph. (MRSA is what they are refered to Methacillin Resistant Staphalococcus Aureus. There are alrmingly few drugs left to treat this and other resistant forms of bacteria.)

This list that we kept used to have one or two names added to it a month with this MRSA superbug, but when I was working there, we were adding 2-3 names a DAY!! The numbers are rising, but we are at the end of our rope with drugs to fight them.

These Superbugs are caused by over perscribing antibiotics, and Dr's who give a dose before they even know what is nesessary. Also, people who are on an antibiotic who actually NEED it, but quit as soon as their symptoms clear up are helping the bug form resistance. The old addage "what doens't kill you only makes you stronger" is a perfect one for the bacteria. If a person stops taking the antibiotic before the bugs are all dead, the ones remaining have gotten a taste of the drug and learn to tolerate it. So next round you try will not be as effective.

Also, Dr's these days are trying to fight a pulic who feels that if they go to the Dr, they need to walk away with a perscription. If a Dr isn't willing to give them one, then they can always find one who will.

I hate taking pills and feel that my body will handle it. My mother (sorry mom) has the opinion that if you have a sniffle, take a pill. If you are coughing or sneezing, take a pill. You should allow your body to hanlde it unless it's bad enough that it can't. There are bad bugs that need the top guns, but taking something for everything is just overkill.

I couldn't agree with you more. The good thing though is that people's immune systems also grow stronger as well. We can only hope that doctors and patients both curb their ways and that new and better anti-biotics are invented to bridge the gap with many of our current and failing ones.

Anti-bacterial soap is also another culprit in the super-bug creating process.

And I think I heard that using those anti-bacterial wipes are not good to use also.

Okay...here's Mom chiming in! I started laughing when you said I always say "take a pill". I guess when it comes to my kids being sick, I always say "did you take something for that?" I just know if I can't breath, I want a pill to help unstop everything...those aren't the same as the antibiotics. Anyway...thank God...I haven't had a cold in so many years, I can't even remember. I have been blessed with good health and thank God for it often! The only pills I take nowadays are strong Tylenol for my arthritis pains, vitamins and of course, my prescription blood pressure meds.

And you are right, those aren't antibiotics. It's just the idea that people want pills when they get sick. But taking something for every little symptom is countering your body's attempt to take care of the problem. Like diarrhea (sp?), you should only take something if it's prolonged. You body is trying to get rid of something it knows is bad. If you stop the process before the bad stuff is allowed to pass, you are just making it stay longer in your body to cause more problems.

The only pills I take are tylenol, ibuprofen and other pain killers and only because I get some nasty headaches a lot. I usually don't think anything else is really needed. I avoid prescriptions and if I do happen to fill one I always try other ways of getting better before resorting to the medicine. Plus I am one of the ones guilty of not completing my dosage. I just really really hate taking medication and so when it feels like I don't have to anymore I will stop. So I figure that it would be better if I just avoided it all together!

I cannot remember the last time I took an antibiotic...I don't even get the flu shot.

By the way...how would one get a job like that? What kind of degree is necessary for that? Sounds like something that could be very interesting!

I have an MLT degree. It is an associates degree, but with all the "other" classes, I have 4 years of college. Most of the other stuff is also under a Biology degree that I have as well. But it is a 2 year degree to be an MLT (Medical Lab Tech) and another 2 years to upgrade to an MT (Medical Tech). It's lots of fun!

As for your response to my discussion, I am the same when it comes to taking pills. I have the 2 that I HAVE to take everyday, but I have to be in pretty bad shape to take any others. I got some chewable Tylenol, but it tastes pretty bad. So I usually suffer until I can't stand it, then I'll take something. It's bee a long time since I've had an antibiotic also.
