| | Sodium Hydroxide is extremely caustic when concentrated - but apart from being caustic is not actually toxic. In other words, if you neutralise the alkalinity, it is not a poison.
If you have a product which you are making and it is too acidic (even natural acids can be quite strong), then adding a small amount of sodium Hydroxide can safely neutralise the acidity to whatever degree is required.
Yes, death can be caused by it - just like death can be caused by water if you get a pan of it boiling slowly poured over you - but to suggest water should be banned because it kills THOUSANDS ever year (drowning, burns etc) would be daft.
The same is true of this product. Other than being caustic if concentrated, it is NOT a harmful product - and indeed sometimes the LACK of the product would cause health issues when the product then became too acidic.
I have no involvement with the food companies or chemical companies - just a modest understanding of basic chemistry so the only "axe I have to grind" is in not letting people worry about harmless ingredients (other than when concentrated eg oven cleaner) - when there are a whole range of chemical additives that really DO need to be controlled more tightly. | | | |
