an apropriate end to the love story???

If it had a happy ending, we would not remember the film like we do.It is because Rick and Ilsa go their separate ways the film is one of the best films ever made. Besides the war was on and Rick and Ilsa had things to do to help the fight. Remember that line that Ilsa's husband says right before he gets on the plane, " Welcome back to the fight. This time I know our side will win."And what Rick said to Ilsa. I can't remeber the exact words but he implied that he had things that she couldn't be a part of. So I always thought that Rick was going to help the resistance.And it was made in 1941-1942.In those days the code wouldn't let a movie come out where a married woman leaves her husband for another man.

It would not be right for Elsa to leave her husband for Rick. She was married and besides, had they remained in Casablanca, they would not have rallied their countrymen living in exile in the States. The only way, in those days, for Rick and her to be together was if her husband was killed, and then, according to the code then, the story would be sometime after the war was over so that she would not be suspected in her husband's demise.

I should say it was a good ending. On whether or not i think Rick deserved Ilsa, i think the answer is quite clear with Rick's reply to Ilsa's question;

"We'll always have Paris"

anything less would've destroyed the movie.

For the time that was happening, yes. although the romantic in me still think of the possibilities. but to be realistic, there was a war going on. The woman in question was married to an influential man who was a threat to the Axis Powers and for all concerned, it was best that he leave and she go with him. She was married to him before being with Rick, and only got with Rick because she thought that Victor was presumed dead. To find out that he wasn't caused her some grief I'm sure when she's just about to leave Paris with Nick just as the Germans was coming in, she had a heavy decision to make which is why she broke it off with Nick that way leaving him with a broken heart. Perhaps if Victor Lazlo wasn't alive, yep the story would go in Nick's favor, but that wasn't to be. Nick was right on that and when he talks about the problems of three little people in a great big world not amounting to much made me think about my life too. One of my favorite movies.
