As most Americans know, most President's (with the exception of Harry S. Tuman) are millionaires. After elected, they are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as their salary each year. This means that they truly have no knowledge of what the "average" citizen of this country does to survive on their meager salaries.
I think it would be a great idea that anyone running for President has to live for an entire year on minimum wage as a salary. It doesn't even have to be minimum wage. It can be $11.00 an hour. Maybe then our President's can appreciate what we go through day in and day out to survive and make ends meet! Heck, the same should apply for all of our elected Senators and Congressmen/women!
I know this will never, ever happen, but I would like to kow what ya'll think about this idea.

fpd,I understand completely the point your trying to get at with regard to the middle class crunch we all are facing..But to even suggest that the most powerful man in the world in the most powerful country in the world with the wealthiest economy in the world and most responsibility in the world ,work for eleven dollars an hour is ridiculous.
Truth be told the President is under payed,Would you take responsibility for the welfare of the entire country for about 300 thousand a year .It is the C.E.O's of this country that downsize our jobs and make multi million dollar salaries for companies that don't even earn profits that are ruining our collective futures.
Yes the dishonest politicians are to blame as well;the lobbyist pay for their campaign re-elections..so who they going to favor?
I could rant about this subject all day,but it just gets my blood boiling .

I didn't realize that this was a place for stand-up comedy here!
I was discussing the poverty level in the US with a co-worker a few days ago, I looked it up...it is 9300 for a single person and 31,570 for a family of 8.
So they are saying that a single person can work 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year for net (I assume this is net) approximately 4.50 an hour. In round numbers that is $180 a week. Let's see - rent, food, clothing - I don't know about you but I think this number is way low.
I think the president and the congressman and the senators and governors and all our state reps etc...should have to live for a year with their families at ...oh I will be generous.....twice the poverty level and see how they do.
I think this would be a more then generous amount for them...what do you think?

Debs, I wasn't trying to be funny :P
I was thinking more along the lines of the middle class. The poverty level in the richest country in the world is disgusting. Shame on me for not putting it in my equation. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
The spoiled eschelon that are our politicians would never make it on twice the poverty level, but I like your idea.

ciciheyhey, I do believe you missed the whole point of what I was saying!
When one is the leader of a country and makes decisions regarding the well-being of it's poverty stricken and average citizens, one doesn't need to "look like a million bucks"! I could care less what my President is wearing when he passes a health, education or immigration bill.
