The salary of The U.S. President. |
| |
| As most Americans know, most President's (with the exception of Harry S. Tuman) are millionaires. After elected, they are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as their salary each year. This means that they truly have no knowledge of what the "average" citizen of this country does to survive on their meager salaries. I think it would be a great idea that anyone running for President has to live for an entire year on minimum wage as a salary. It doesn't even have to be minimum wage. It can be $11.00 an hour. Maybe then our President's can appreciate what we go through day in and day out to survive and make ends meet! Heck, the same should apply for all of our elected Senators and Congressmen/women! I know this will never, ever happen, but I would like to kow what ya'll think about this idea. PEACE | | | | | |

| | Debs, I wasn't trying to be funny :P I was thinking more along the lines of the middle class. The poverty level in the richest country in the world is disgusting. Shame on me for not putting it in my equation. Thanks for pointing that out to me. The spoiled eschelon that are our politicians would never make it on twice the poverty level, but I like your idea. | | remember when they whole nation was focused on the immigration bill not passing (which it didn't) the house snuck through a bill to raise their pay to 197,000 a year, that's triple what my husband makes fo us a single income family to live on and expect teh americans to be happy with a pittance for a raise in minimum wages. I would like to see the President and Congress live on a salary cut for a year at best......they wouldn't make it. Mooch | | | |

| | I think it'd be pretty cool to have a prime minister (I live in Canada, so I can't really relate too well to you, but I'll try anyway) being paid the average salary; but I don't want to take this too far and say everyone should be paid the average salary. After all, that sounds pretty communism-like; I'm not saying communism isn't a good path to go, but I just don't like that method. I'm not sure though, to be honest; a prime minister/president would need to be very caring in order to take up such a post of responsibility with such a meager salary! This would, however, eliminate the possibility of a conflict of interest that might occur between prime ministers/presidents and their citizens, right? I mean, it means that they have the citizens best interests at heart. | | | | | | |

| | And don't forget that they are continue to be paid and recieve benefits like Secret service for the rest of their lives, i believe the Presidents salary is almost 500K a year.....and that's after all the other perks, of a place to live etc, etc, etc. I think something needs to give on this, as we continue to pay for government salaries long after they leave office. | | I think the President's salary was raised from $200,000 to $400,000 a year. I know for sure I have never received a raise of 100% of my salary in any job I have held. PEACE | | | |

| | ciciheyhey, I do believe you missed the whole point of what I was saying! When one is the leader of a country and makes decisions regarding the well-being of it's poverty stricken and average citizens, one doesn't need to "look like a million bucks"! I could care less what my President is wearing when he passes a health, education or immigration bill. PEACE | | | |

| | fpd,I understand completely the point your trying to get at with regard to the middle class crunch we all are facing..But to even suggest that the most powerful man in the world in the most powerful country in the world with the wealthiest economy in the world and most responsibility in the world ,work for eleven dollars an hour is ridiculous. Truth be told the President is under payed,Would you take responsibility for the welfare of the entire country for about 300 thousand a year .It is the C.E.O's of this country that downsize our jobs and make multi million dollar salaries for companies that don't even earn profits that are ruining our collective futures. Yes the dishonest politicians are to blame as well;the lobbyist pay for their campaign re-elections..so who they going to favor? I could rant about this subject all day,but it just gets my blood boiling . | | | | | | |

| | Yes, I think in order to have a democracy "For the people, by the people", the man or woman running our country should experience what most of the people are experiencing day in and day out! PEACE | | | |
