When is a child old enough to sit in the car without a car seat? or a booster seat? I know they can't sit in the front seat until age 12 but not sure about the carseat thing. And when do you change them from a car seat to a booster seat? Whats the difference really? Can't you just use your car seat until they are old enought to sit on the regular seat?

I believe it all depends on what state you live in as to what the car seat laws are. Here in Virginia they just passed a law the a child has to be in a booster seat until age 8. You can buy the car seats that the child will grow into. Like change from a car seat to a booster as the child grows. I would check with your state police department. They can fill you in on all the details for your state. I do know when you are traveling, you are required to make sure your within the law of each state you pass through when it comes to child safety in vehicles.

I didn't even think about when you go through different states having to go by the laws of that state for your child. I don't think we will be traveling anytime soon anyway but yep I do need to keep that in mind. thanks.

I think when deciding the type of seats to use for children, it varies but I think age, weight and height are things to consider. Infants should ride a rear-facing convertible until they are 1 year old. Toddlers/pre-schoolers ride in a forward facing seat as long as they weigh at least 20 pounds. Booster seats are best suited for children below 8 years old while childrens who have outgrown their booster seats should use the seatbelts and ride in the back until they are 13 years old. Remember that a driver will be fined $25 for each occupant that is 12, 13, 14, 15 years old and not wearing a seatbelt.
