do you still use diskettes? |
in our fast-paced world today, you can do many things in just one click. cellphones are becoming smaller and more compact. millions of transistors can now be integrated in one single chip. diskettes are now being replaced with flash disks. laptops and notebook computers now omit floppy drives. why? because the old 3.5-inch diskettes are becoming obsolete. they now have usb drives in place of floppy drives. flash disks have more memory than diskettes. one diskette can store up to 1.44 MB of data. on the other hand, flash disks can store GB of data! before, we use diskettes for saving documents especially when submitting assignments and projects to our teachers. today, assignments can be passed via email. most of the time, teachers use the power point and lcd projectors in their discussions. it's much simpler this way. students can now ask for copies using flash disks. but i still use diskettes, they are useful for troubleshooting via DOS. how about you? do you still use diskettes? for what?=)

4. sharky25k (125) | 3 years ago | The floppy is something old i don't think that somebody is still using this things.
The DOS problems can be solved with a CD you don't need to use floppy disks.

5. bluishrose (1651) | 3 years ago | I still have or use diskettes though i have a usb drive. Sometimes its for emergency purposes that there are some computers that are low end and can't read usb drives specially in offices. Specially for oldies who still are not familiar with other types of storage.
| |
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | yeah old computers don't have usb drives so it's better to keep some spare diskettes at home.=)

6. faith210 (8437) | 3 years ago | Hi josan181237! Our world is getting so high-tech and to be honest with you, I really can't keep up with all the new technologies nowadays. Life is getting easier and convenient but OMG so complicated. However, it's been a long time since I used diskettes. Anyway I am not so much a techie person, but my hubby have USBs for his use. have a nice day and take care!

8. mykmari_08 (1893) | 3 years ago | Yes, I still do. Inspite of the advancement in technology, I have no choice but to use diskettes; because my pc here in the office only accepts diskettes. I'm not yet given an upgraded pc until now. There are reports which we have to submit to our regulatory bodies locally, so we use diskettes everytime.
| |
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | yes, there are still establishments that still use old computers so diskettes would still come in handy for those.=)

9. lexus54 (2667) | 3 years ago | 3.5-inch diskettes are arcade. I have stopped using them for more than 3 years now, although I have some old data stored on diskettes from work done in the past. I guess the data is also obsolete or of little value now. The last two PCs I bought in recent years also didn't come with any floppy drives, so even if I wanted to read my diskettes I didn't have the reader to do so. I wouldn't want to go out to the shops to buy an external floppy diskette drive, because the price is certainly not worth it for the little benefit that I will get out of it. I'd rather save that money and buy a flash drive instead.
| |
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | but if the data is really important, you can go to internet cafes maybe they have a floppy drive there so you could read the data from your diskette.=)
| |
lexus54 (2667) | 3 years ago | That's an option open. What I do though is to cannibalize older computers and keep the working floppy drive in my cabinet. I don't mount it in any of my current PCs, but if I have to I can just connect it up to my PCs and have it installed. I have kept the drive for a few years now, and found that I never had to use it, so maybe another year down the road, I will just throw it away.
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | if you don't find it useful, then it's better to sell it.=)
| |
lexus54 (2667) | 3 years ago | There's really not much monetary value in such old used drives. You want to buy one from me? 50 cts...shipping alone will cost more than this...haha.
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | no thanks haha! i know the shipping is more expensive. lol. one time we ordered an IC in the internet for our project. the IC was not that expensive but the shipping was. lol. if you don't want to sell it you can give it away. don't just throw it.=)
| |
lexus54 (2667) | 3 years ago | I'll probably do that when it's economic value to me becomes zero. That will likely be after I've disposed all the floppy diskettes around the house.

10. mesmerized (755) | 3 years ago | i don't use diskettes anymore, although we have gazillion diskettes here at home, collecting dust. about five months ago, i still bring diskettes to computer shops, for printing purposes. but the computer wouldn't read the files, saying, "the diskette is not formatted. format it now?" so i had to resort to something else, (deductions due to late submission of paper is motivation enough) i e-mail all my files to myself, and open it in the computer shop, which proved to take a lot of time. so i took the liberty of buying one of those small flash disks in my favorite color, red. and it served its purpose really well and i can't deny the fact that they are really cute and easy to carry around.
| |
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | i also email my files (especially my projects) to myself for backup in case of emergencies. you may never know when your computer will crash so it's always good to have a backup plan. but for opening files in a computer shop, i just use the flash disks since it is faster than opening the files in your email.=)

josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | and yeah..our diskettes here all gather dust and we also have that formatting problem which is why it's not a good way to save files in a diskette.;)
| |
mesmerized (755) | 3 years ago | yes, that's all true. thank you yahoo mail. i've also tried uploading essays, projects, and pictures in multiply in case i'll need it someday. i only let one or two friends see it, and they know it's my project. so they don't really read or open it at all.
| |
josan181237 (609) | 3 years ago | i also email my project files to my groupmates so they also have a copy.=)
