Do You Pay Collection Agencies?

Some people may not know this but you are not obligated to pay collection agencies when you owe a debt. They purchase debts from companies at a fraction of what you owe anticipating their ability to intimidate you into paying them. If you owe a company or bank, you owe them not the collection agency and you have the right to refuse to pay the agency they sold your debt to.
I pay only people/companies I owe. I never pay a collection agency. I think they are the most vile companies in the world. People find themselves in a bad situation that they are unable to handle and these people attack like wolves. They will use any tactic to bait you into paying them even though they have no legal recourse to force you to do so.
The most they can do is put the debt on your credit report and it is likely that the company you actually owe has already done this anyway so they are really of no threat at all.
Please do not misunderstand what I am saying. I believe in paying the debts I owe but I believe in paying the debt to who I owe not some agency who will do anything to get you to pay them. Their agents are often cruel and will resort to the most underhanded tactics. That's why I refuse to pay them. I will not reward people for acting so inhumane.
You would be better off negotiating with the company you owe to see if they would accept a portion of what you owe to have the debt removed from your credit report.
