I never did it because I thought it was an human thing. Our teeth are different from the dog's. They have teeth like bones and they don't have cavities like we do.

But I heard that since they eat dog food they need to get the teeth brushed.

What do you do?

It is true that dogs don't get cavities like humans but they do get gum disease, and it is actually pretty common. Dry food cleans the crowns of the teeth but not under the gumline so it is important to brush your dog's teeth because gum infection can release bacteria into the blood stream if it get bad enough and could possibly cause death.

Use a toothpaste that is made for dogs. It is flavored with meat so they think it's yummy. The first few days just rub some on the dog's gums so he gets used to you handling his mouth. Then use a soft bristled toothbrush. It is most important to brush his top back teeth where most problems begin. Eventually he may let you brush his whole mouth but if you can only do the top back teeth it well help keep him healthier.
